Yesterday, the Maine Ethics Commission voted to investigate the National Organization for Marriage, based on a complaint from Fred Karger, who has been tracking NOM's tricks for awhile now. The Board determined that Karger's complaint warranted additional inquiry to see if NOM is breaking Maine's campaign finance laws. Maine has tough campaign finance laws and enforces them. (Maine also has very liberal voter registration laws, making it very, very easy to vote.)
NOM and its allies from the Catholic Bishop's office are whining about the investigation. Apparently, they really think the laws don't apply to them. We already know the truth doesn't matter to that side either. "Lying for the Lord" isn't just a Mormon tenet anymore. The Catholic Bishop and the anti-gay campaign he's funding has adopted that strategy, too. It's shameful.
One additional takeaway from the hearing yesterday was Brian Brown's admission that NOM intends to spend a lot more in Maine:
The group, which was founded in 2007 to fight gay marriage across the country, has reported contributing $160,000 to Stand for Marriage Maine.We still don't know where NOM gets its money and won't before election day. But, we do know that the anti-gay side will have plenty of NOM's shady money.
Brian Brown, executive director of the National Organization for Marriage, said his group will give an additional "couple hundred thousand" dollars to Stand for Marriage as they work together to repeal Maine's gay-marriage law.
