Yesterday, the Washington Post reported on the effort by Virginia Republicans to soften their image. Bob McDonnell is exhibit A. He's really toned down his theocratic rhetoric. He's been acting like a moderate, which he isn't. But, at least McDonnell is playing the part.
But, then, there's Virginia's GOP candidate for Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli. He's very scary. Yesterday, the Virginian-Pilot endorsed the Democrat, Steve Shannon, for AG, and included this information about Cuccinelli. It sure sounds like Cuccinelli would use his office to criminalize "homosexual acts":
[Cuccinelli] declined to commit to a nondiscrimination policy against gays and lesbians observed by former Attorney General Bob McDonnell: “ My view is that homosexual acts, not homosexuality, but homosexual acts are wrong. They’re intrinsically wrong. And I think in a natural law based country it’s appropriate to have policies that reflect that. ... They don’t comport with natural law. I happen to think that it represents (to put it politely; I need my thesaurus to be polite) behavior that is not healthy to an individual and in aggregate is not healthy to society.”Ken Cuccinelli wants to be the top law enforcement official in Virginia. Apparently, he's unaware of the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas. Or, worse yet, Cuccinelli thinks his version of "natural law" trumps the U.S. Supreme Court. You can't get much more theocratic than that.
