Report from Maine: The No on 1 campaign is in high gear

| Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK

I've been in Maine since Tuesday night and it's been a whirlwind. Yesterday, I went with Jesse Connolly to watch the haters press conference. Then, came back to the office to upload some of the videos from the crazy haters. The anti-gay campaign tried to distance itself from these nuts, but Paul Madore explained the he's working "in union" with that campaign and the Diocese here. And, Madore told the Diocese about the presser with LaBabera and Camenker:

That's their side. Our side is kicking butt. Portland has already set a record for absentee ballots in a non-Presidential election year.

This is all about turnout. Last night, I attended a get-out-the-vote training session with some of the folks who will be coordinating the work over the next few days. My team for GOTV includes my sister, Sharon, and John Hennessy, both of whom are in the foreground of this photo:

The campaign office is just abuzz. There are a lot of very focused volunteers and staffers working away. It's always hopping here.
Rex Wockner has an array of great photos, too. He's here, but I haven't seen him yet.

Also, last night, I talked to a woman I've known for over 30 years. She got push-polled by the "Yes on 1" side. At first, she was asked her the usual questions about voting habits and demographics. Then, she was asked if she'd vote Yes on question 1. Even after she told the caller that she was voting no on question 1 because she had a lesbian daughter who was in a committed relationship, the Yes caller persisted. And, he got offensive. He asked by friend how she viewed the "homosexual lifestyle" and how she felt about teaching "those things" in school. She blasted the caller and hung up. But, that's how disturbed the other side is. They're not only push polling, they're harassing our supporters. But, on the Yes side tangled with the wrong Mainer with that call.
