Dear Washington Post editors: The Catholic Church is trying to prevent marriage equality in DC and everywhere else

| Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK

An editorial in today's Washington Post seems to think common ground can be found between marriage equality supporters and the Catholic Church:

YOU MIGHT not realize, given the fury between Catholic Charities and the D.C. Council, that the Catholic Church is not trying to prevent the legalization of same-sex marriage in the District. Rather, the battle is over the impact that the legislation could have on the vital services it provides.
Don't be fooled: The Catholic Church is using its claims about the impact of the marriage law to undermine and kill it.

Perhaps if the editors of the Post paid any attention to what happened in Maine, they'd know that the Catholic Bishop led and funded the campaign to strip Maine's same-sex couple of their right to marry. After the D.C. law passes, let's see how hard the Catholic Bishops lobby Congress to kill it. The Bishop's are flush with their victory on the Stupak amendment. Democratic leaders already caved to Bishops on the issue of women's health.

The Post's editors make a fundamental mistake by assuming there are "people of goodwill" on both sides of this issue. The Catholic Bishops have become the nation's leading gay bashers. There's no good will there.
