NOM wants Congress to overturn D.C.'s new marriage law

Unlike residents of another other state or city, Congress gets to review laws passed by our elected City Council here in D.C. They've got 30 legislative days to act. So, we don't have a vote in Congress, but Congress gets veto power over the people for whom we vote.

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the notoriously anti-gay group headed by Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown, wants Congress to overturn D.C.'s new marriage equality law. NOM blasted out an email after the vote today, which included this screed:

It's time for Congress to step up and restore the rule of law in the District of Columbia. If the DC Government is going to trample the rights of their citizens, Congress must intervene, invalidating the same-sex marriage bill unless or until the Council agrees to respect the rights of DC voters to bring an initiative petition.
D.C.'s Human Rights laws prevents public votes on any issues "that authorizes discrimination." NOM's sole mission is to foster discrimination against gay Americans.

Anyway, there's likely to be some chatter in Congress about this over the next few weeks. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) (Yes, he's a Mormon) has been squawking about D.C.'s marriage law for awhile now. But, we fully expect Democratic leadership to hold the line on this one.
