AP’s “vodka cam” records NYC gay protest against Russian vodka (video)

I’d posted photos earlier of the vodka-dumping protest at the Russian consulate in NYC, sponsored by a number of groups, including Queer Nation and the Russian LGBT group RUSA-LGBT. And now we have video.  #dumpstoli

The event was held to protest Russia’s recent brutal crackdown of gay and trans people in that country.  In response, the lgbt community and our allies launched a worldwide boycott of Russian products, specifically targeting Russian vodkas, like famed-brand Stolichnaya.

The best coverage of the event, by far, goes to the Associated Press, that had a “vodka-cam” set on the ground where the Russian liquor was going to be poured out.

  1. fuck bitches they call me papi says:

You fags are dumb as fuck…..how’s purchasing the Russian vodka then dumping it out significant to getting back at Russia…. YOUR PAYING FOR IT …. maybe stop drinking it was what you were looking for… or maybe the excessive seamen intake is just impairing the faggots ability to think logically…

  2. mike31c says:

Fuck these russian pigs and their garbage products.

  3. Dumbass says:

Lets buy stoli and dump it out, that will show them!

  4. Chris Pasquariello says:

Because gay-rights groups have their own agenda. They don’t care about gays.

  5. Chris Pasquariello says:

No one is against gays being gay. Queers know that they are more free today than they ever have been. But. this pinkwashing does nothing for the cause and it is a waste of time and money. Good luck trying to force your ideology onto others though; let me know how that goes.

  6. HeartlandLiberal says:

Spokesghoul. I like it. It should end up in the dictionary. It could also describe very accurately most PR front people for today’s politicians.

  7. HeartlandLiberal says:

Sorry, but turn off the *()*)(&(*& autoplay of the video. I came to this page and almost had a heart attack when the video starting blasting music from an ad, because I had left my speakers turned up from a game I was playing last night.

Autoplay of video and musics ranks in the top ten things that ‘web sites that suck’ do. PLEASE have your designers go and read Vincent Flander’s Web Pages That Suck site, the go to site to learn how NOT to design a web site. Don’t make me nominate this site for a monthly award.

This is one of five political blogs I read multiple times a day, because the commentary and content is so good. Please don’t change that by allowing stuff like autoplay videos and ads.

I got the info from the various interviews and statements made by Yuri to the media. It’s all out there for you to see if you want to look for it.

The letter doesn’t say that because SPI wanted to more support the LGBT community than just focus on “buy from us” lines. They support the meaning behind the boycott, even if they don’t understand why they are a target for it.

It is still buying grain from Russia because it has a contract with the company that supplies the grain. However, they has lessened their involvement in Russia over the years and they are down to a single distillery that produces grain, with all the rest of their buildings and vodka production being in Latvia. Again, Yuri has stated all of this.

  9. Thom Allen says:

Have no idea what’s on your facebook page. You’re just trying to go off topic. What I see is what you’ve posted here. Staunch defense of Our Friend Stoli. Almost like a crusade. And ou haven’t answered my questions. How did you get all of the inside info on Stoli that you posted? Why doesn’t the CEO’s letter ask that LGBTQs stop dumping and start buying stoli? If stoli is so gay supportive, why is it still buying Russian grains? Russia has been LGBTQ for a long time. If stoli loved us, they’d buy grains elsewhere than Russia.

  10. Sterling Ericsson says:

You mean the neo-Nazis groups attacking the Russian LGBT community that I have discussed multiple times on my Facebook page, often before it was picked up by the mainstream news?

  11. Thom Allen says:

Of course you are, Sterlingovich. Heck, shucks, gawsh. And where do you get all of your inside info on Stoli? Why don’t you seem to be as concerned about the Russian human rights aspect as you are with promoting Stoli?

  12. Sterling Ericsson says:

I have no connection with SPI or Russia, for that matter. Feel free to look me up. I’m using my real name, after all. I’m a 22 year old student in Nebraska.

Heck, go look up my Facebook page.

  13. Thom Allen says:

Thank you for being the spokesghoul for all children in the world. Now, go back to your cauldron, sniff the fumes and give us another pronouncement.

  14. Thom Allen says:

Interesting. REALLY sounds like you’re quite CLOSELY connected to SPI. Perhaps have an INSIDE track. Like being on the payroll, posting nothing but apologies for STOLI. As a matter of fact, you’ve posted very little over the past few days EXCEPT to denounce anti-Stoil actions and keep telling us that Stoli is our friend. Please, keep posting. I think your pronouncements are actually having the opposite effect from what you intend.

Oddly, the CEOs letter on the Stoli website DOESN’T ask that LGBTQs stop their Stoli boycott and buy our Russian vodka “friend.”

  15. Sterling Ericsson says:

And Yuri stated that he is supportive of the intent behind the boycott, but he is also confused on why we are boycotting his company, which has always supported the LGBT community.

Not to mention that Putin hates Yuri and his company, so we are actually on Putin’s side in boycotting them. I bet Putin is just applauding the whole thing.

  16. Sterling Ericsson says:

I am supportive of one of the LGBT community’s longtime allies.

And SPI Group (the company that owns the Stolichnaya brand) is very limited in what it can do in Russia because it is currently in a longrunning series of lawsuits with the Russian government. If it is too active within Russia against the government, that can cause it to lose the case and its entire company to the Russian government.

SPI is doing what it can. As the owner, Yuri, stated recently in response to the boycott, they sent a chunk of funds to one of the major Russian LGBT groups so that they can do all that stuff.

  17. Thom Allen says:

If Stoli is so supportive, they can be as active against the Russian policies on their Stoli RUSSIAN website as well. They can divert “Stoli Guy” ad cash to protesting. Did you read their CEO’s letter on the Stoli US site? Stoli/Mendeleev SUPPORT the boycott.

How many shares of Stoli do you own? In all of you’re posts you’re REALLY supportive of Stoli, instead of human rights.

  18. BeccaM says:

Your avatar photo is quite apt.

  19. Sterling Ericsson says:

Why are we advocating against one of the most LGBT supportive companies in the world? Stolichnaya has supported the LGBT community for years.

They produced the Be Real documentary series on their own dime to allow LGBT people to tell their stories. They have funded dozens of LGBT groups across the world.

They have long been our friend.

And this is how we repay them? By scapegoating their friendship to serve our political goals?

Since when did the LGBT community become the Republican Party?

  20. Chris Pasquariello says:

Children shouldn’t feel strange for being straight. Especial when 96% percent of them are straight. There are more important things to draw attention to.

  21. GeorgeMokray says:

You know that these new Russian policies prove that Vladimir Putin is an active homosexual.
