Senior Russian sports official: No one wants gay naked Nazis at the Olympics

It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. I’m almost feeling sorry for the Russian government at this point.  It simply can’t help itself.

The latest numbskull to shoot himself in the foot is Russia’s World Cup Chief, Alexey Sorokin.

In an interview with World Football Insider, Sorokin, while defending Russia’s draconian new anti-gay law, compared gays to Nazis, and then went on about how no one wants naked gay people running around the Olympics.  Sorokin also invoked the too-smart-by-half lie about the anti-gay law that I talked about yesterday.

Alexey-Sorokin-gay-nazis

Russian World Cup head, and FIFA rep, Alexey Sorokin.

First off, Sorokin tried to claim that the law doesn’t ban gay people, it just bans “gay propaganda.”  Of course, what do the Russians consider gay propaganda?  A gay Olympic athlete showing up at an official Olympic event with his husband.

Then Sorokin went off on some weird tangent about how no one wants a “World Cup where naked people are running around displaying their homosexuality.” I don’t know about you, but I think I might enjoy that.  Though I’m not entirely sure what this has to do with gay people.

And then came the Nazi comparison.

“The Olympics and World Cup are not a stage for various views… not for Nazis, not for any other ways of life.”

Of course, the irony is that the Russian authorities have no problem with Nazis, so long as they’re kidnapping gay teenagers and torturing them.

Finally, Sorokin pulled the “we’re not going to arrest anyone, unless of course we arrest them” argument that the Russians have been making for a while now.

Sorokin said Russia had given assurances from high-level government officials that the law would not affect athletes or fans “unless someone intends to be actively involved in the propaganda of this”.

“They have nothing more to fear. They have guarantees and assurances that they will not be affected. The minister of sport [Vitaly Mutko] has given a full and detailed explanation.

Mutko was our other Russian foot-in-mouth friend, who was the first to spill the beans that the Russians planned to jail Olympic athletes, guests and media.  Then yesterday, the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed what Mutko had been saying all along, that the Russians would jail any Olympic athletes, fans, or media who violate its terrifyingly-vague anti-gay “propaganda” law.

Back to Sorokin.  Did you catch what he did there?  Sorokin claims that athletes and fans to Russian sporting events like the World Cup and the Sochi Olympic won’t be affected by the new anti-gay propaganda law, unless of course, Sorokin add, foreign athletes and fans violate the anti-gay propaganda law, in which case the Russians will throw their sorry asses in a gulag.

Glad Sorokin could clarify this for us.  I’m sure the 2018 World Cup in Russia is going to be a blast with Sorokin running it.

Speaking of Nazis…

Dunno about Russia, but the NOM crowd has been heavily involved with the anti-gay-marriage movement in France – which has a nasty habit of rallies turning into fascist saluting….

And now it’s totally out of control. Don’t you dare paint your nails in rainbow colours!

The Nazis sent homosexuals to concentration camps and forced them to wear the pink triangle. These comments are a rehash to the old Soviet myths about homosexuality and fascism being linked.

Indeed. Case in point: while banning LGBT pride events, the authorities here have repeatedly allowed for Nazi marches to take place.

    Of course — shrinkage!

  8. Badgerite says:

If they really wanted to ease the controversy you would think they would just say explicitly that the Olympic venues will be international space in which that particular law would be completely suspended. They want to pretend that they are standing up for some great moral principle in the world. I think they are playing to the Muslim world and some parts of Africa.

  9. radhika says:

Surely some viewers would be up for ‘gay, naked Nazi’ pix.

  10. Ninong says:

I think they were talking about the SUMMER Olympics! This is the WINTER Olympics — big difference!

  11. woodroad34 says:

Why’s he going to be there then? I’m sure he’s got the uniform…he has the hair…and given his adamant statement, I’m definitely sure there’s a “selfie” out there somewhere. Вы идете девочка

I think this closet case fool has been in denial for decades and has been watching too much American Taliban TV.

  13. Katherine Wolfe says:

Personally, I won’t be watching this Olympics if it’s held under these circumstances. It’s an outrageous and unacceptable violation of human rights, and I personally will not reward it in any way whatsoever. I have watched every Olympics for as long as I can remember – but not this one.

  14. josephebacon says:

Wow, they’re just as dumb as Teabaggers!

  15. masteradrian says:

Lets be honest, the FIFA as institution is a very conservative club of out-of-touch geezers with no brains, and mr. Sorokin is one of the best examples of such specimen!
As to the statement in the article that the Russian government does not oppose to nazis abusing and murdering gay people, it has been found that the Russian Secret Service uses their own trainees as so-called punks and other thugs. Not saying that the Russian SS (what’s in an abbreviation hey?) is not fully nazi-promoting!

BAN RUSSIA from the Sotchi Winter Games 2014, and ban all Sotchi 2014 sponsors from stores around the world! There’s no need of nazi-supporters and sponsors!

  16. Max_1 says:

The IOC is incorrect to NOT protect the athletes by demanding Russia, at least, suspend their “propaganda laws” during the Olympics as a sign of “respect for ALL Nations participating”, style of gesture.

I say go after the “SPONSORS”.

Face it people, the world today, is not the world it was in 1999. It’s just NOT! The world TODAY is ‘run’ by economic responses… Coming to you local Fascist Government. You want your Government to “listen”? BOYCOTT THE SPONSORS!!!

Let Micky’Deez and KochAcola, etc. feel it in their wallets. Once they tell the IOC about their shareholder “issues” the world will see Russia, change.

  17. Max_1 says:

And is Canada threatening to arrest any First Nation People for getting fresh water? Sorry…

I see these two different issues for what they are.
Both offensive to the people it affects yet one comes with being labeled a criminal. Although the long term suffering leads to a cultural suffocation of sorts and clean accessible water would improve quality of life issues, the immediate threat of incarceration, punishment, and possible inhumane treatment/torture is just as powerful a “life changer” as being poisoned to death by bad water. It’s just so, so much more shocking to the conscious…

  28. AnitaMann says:

Read the quote carefully. He said, “…displaying their homosexuality.” So apparently a Nazi, gay or straight, clothed or naked, would be okay as long as they don’t display gayness. Frankly I would like to see that display, but I don’t get a say in the matter. Alas.

We could probably dredge up an “issue” for almost any country you can name. Let’s stick to the most egreious ones.

  44. redAPPLE says:

Considering how Nazis were I think coupling the word with either gay or naked is an oxymoron.
Considering how close Russia is to Germany and their past struggle during WWII; and how they should remember at least a little bit of that, I think this man is a complete moron.

  45. redAPPLE says:

There is a pattern all right, it is called the Holocaust, it is called the Mexican Student Movement of 1968.
The result of this is not going to be the Olympics being taken away, the result of this is gonna be repression coerced by the IOC and carried out by the government.

  46. FLL says:

Not entirely off-topic are calls from British soccer players to relocate the 2018 World Cup to a country other than Russia. Beginning in 2010, British soccer players have complained about outrageous examples of racist abuse that black players from other countries routinely face in Russia. Here are some quotes from a 2010 article in the Daily Star in England (link here):

“Russia’s racist shame was highlighted two weeks ago when Spartak Moscow fans aimed monkey chants at black Olympique Marseille players in a Champions League clash…Nazi slogans and salutes are common at games, above, and some fans wear Ku Klux Klan masks to taunt opposition black players. The young England players the Daily Star Sunday spoke to said they would feel ‘intimidated’ and would not want to put themselves or their families through the anguish of similar abuse.”

Gay athletes and straight athletes who support gay rights are not the only ones who think that Russia isn’t fit to host international sporting events. Can anyone think of a single other country in the world where black players would be subjected to the spectacle of Ku Klux Klan masks and monkey chants? There is plenty of time to relocate the 2018 World Cup. This is very doable because of the ample time frame.

  47. Hue-Man says:

“Clean running water still a luxury on many native reserves

About 39% of First Nations water systems deemed ‘high risk'”
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/11/28/f-first-nations-water.html
There’s no attempt to deny the poor living conditions on reserves nor other “inconvenient” facts about First Nations – poorer health, higher rates of incarceration, etc. Conversely, Russia is denying its homophobia and claims that gay propaganda laws are not taking rights away from its citizens.

  48. Palto says:

The latest is that the IOC is basically siding with the Russian gov’t at this point. Athletes are not to speak out for gay people or themselves if they are gay.

  49. redAPPLE says:

Ten days before the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, a massacre was carried out by then president Gustavo Diaz Ordaz Bolaños, a ruthless killing that claimed the lives of hundreds of students of UNAM, IPN and other national education institutions, together with their numerous low and middle-class sympathizers, that were protesting pacifically against social injustices.
Of course, this was the tip of the iceberg. Nobody knows how many people disappeared, were tortured and died in the years leading up to the tragedy, we only know the fear and the repression, the losses and the broken ideals.
I did not live through it, I’m too young, however, I do know, I do remember, through every word I’ve been told about it, from those who had to hide for days in the houses and businesses of the neighbors of La Plaza de las Tres Culturas from those who were lied to by Televisa even though they could see the trash trucks picking up mountains of bodies and transporting them through the street, the stench overpowering the already polluted air of the city.
Just like the Holocaust, which also coincided with the Olympics, we see these events as something remote, almost fictional, but here we are, waiting passively until Sochi becomes tainted with blood and Russia becomes a prison.
    This world is rotten.

  50. PeteWa says:

but Neo-Nazis who beat and torture half naked Russian gay 15 year olds, well… the Russian officials are all about having some of that sadomasochistic torture going on!

  51. quax says:

He probably is perpetually surprised about the strange things that come out of his mouth.

  52. FLL says:

Yes, of course. No homo. Looking at Sorokin’s photo, I’m reminded of a comment someone made about their mother, who radically plucked her eyebrows and then drew in high arches. The person said their mother “went through life with a perpetual look of surprise.” Mr. Sorokin does appear to be surprised about something in the photo, but maybe it’s just the effect of the plucked eyebrows.

  53. Crystal Lynn Davis says:

At first I was on the band wagon with the whole, lets keep the Olympics in Russia to show they can’t do this to intimidate people, but now I’m thinking f*** that s*** I’m with George, move the Olympics somewhere else. They’re willing to kill any LGBT just for being who they are, these people don’t care, they WILL arrest an Olympic athlete to make an example out of them.

  54. quax says:

Swastikas in rainbow colors would look really posh, too.

  55. Sare Kumagai says:

Let’s not forget that Canada has it’s own human right’s issues. Did you hear anything about the thousands of First Nations without access to clean drinking water? No, I’ll bet you didn’t. Canada didn’t have an issue pimping out their culture for the Vancouver Olympics though.

  56. quax says:

Since Leonid Brezhnev times everybody in Russia understands that eye brow plugging is a national duty and *totally not gay*.

  57. NJ.Carter says:

Perhaps they have swashtikas and pride flag tatoos on each bum cheek? An indicator that they are Gay Nazis?

  58. quax says:

    Right! Silly me.

  59. quax says:

Well, since Russia seems to be a vigilante free for all, how about the gay Nazis hunt down the not gay ones that entrap and kill gay teenagers.

Then once all the Nazis killed each other, everybody can live happily ever after.

Somehow I think there must be enough material for a Quentin Tarantino script in this story.

  60. Naja pallida says:

    By the toothbrush-style manscaping, obviously.

  61. FLL says:

Quax raises a good point in his comment below about the original Olympics in Ancient Greece. Apparently, there are no Nazis like Olympic athletes in Ancient Greece. Here is an entertaining excerpt from Wikipedia about the Ancient Greek Olympics:

“The athletes usually competed nude, not only as the weather was appropriate, but also as the festival was meant to celebrate, in part, the achievements of the human body. Olive oil was used by the competitors, not only as a substitute for soap for washing, bathing, and cleaning, but also as a natural cosmetic, to keep skin smooth, and provide an appealing look for the participants.”

Can we have a comment from Russia’s World Cup Chief, Alexey Sorokin? By the way, does
    Mr. Sorokin pluck his eyebrows?

  62. nicho says:

    Collagen lips and arched eyebrows.

  63. lynchie says:

You forgot the homophobe poster boy Rickie Sanitorium

  64. quax says:

And it was obviously soo gay. Naughty ancient greek gay Nazis!

  65. kingstonbears says:

Oh Nicho, just look at his lips. My gawd!!

  66. lynchie says:

They have come out in favor of Russia and will enforce sanctions against any athlete who wears rainbow ribbons or in any way brings attention to the Gay community. There is no way it will be moved and no way the American Olympic Committee will boycott. I think we boycott advertisers and write to the head of NBC that you and all your friends and relatives will not watch and will not support the network in any way. Just declare it going back to Vancouver in 2015 and be done with it but alas that will not happen

  67. quax says:

Makes me wonder if this dude knows that the athletes of the antic Olympics always performed naked.

I guess that makes them Nazis, too.

  68. Houndentenor says:

Gay Naked Nazis? Is that even a thing?

  69. Ninong says:

    Vancouver?

  70. Constant Comment says:

What are the IOC’s options at this point in time? Is there another city that could step in at last minute?

  71. Markus Harker says:

We in the west support the Olympics with our TV money and corporate sponsorship. Then a corrupt IOC gives the Olympics to repressive regimes like Russia and China; regimes that routinely violate human rights. And now the IOC is marching in lock step with Russia in defining any expresion of LGBTI identity as political propagnda and threatening athletes with sanctions, in addition to the Putin regime and it’s neoNazi allies’ threats of jail, kidknap, torchore and murder. All for the sake of some athletic competitions? People say “but we have to support the athletes”. We can support other athletic events in countries that uphold human rights, not that routinely violate them. And it is not just about gay rights. The next Olympics is going to be in Brazil. A country that has gay marriage, but routinely turns a blind eye to the rape of the rain forrests and the murder and oppression of native people. My moral sense tells me that I can no longer support the Olympics in any way.

  72. Ninong says:

Apparently you can tell they are gay only if they are naked, or something like that. Maybe they have to run around with Nazi flags with rainbow streamers at the top instead of battle streamers?

  73. Ninong says:

Seems to be a pattern here. Putin continues to say don’t worry, the anti-gay propaganda law won’t be enforced against gay Olympians or their supporters while the rest of the Russian government says the law will be enforced during the Olympics against anyone who dares promote homosexuality. Even the Russians understand how ridiculous this sounds.

Google translates that as: Russian President Vladimir Putin at the same time continues to say that Russia is not a homophobic country and that homophobic laws will not apply to the Olympic Games in Sochi and during the World Cup in 2018. But Russian officials say that (under) this law (there) will not be any exceptions for gay advocates during the Sochi Olympics.

So Putin says don’t worry, be happy, while everybody else says they will arrest your gay Olympic ass if you say anything positive about The Gay.

  74. quax says:

How can you tell they are Nazis when they are naked?

    This is getting very confusing.

  75. pcpablo says:

  78. Ninong says:

Apparently Alexey Sorokin pissed off England 2018 back in October 2010 by saying that London had the highest crime rate and highest alcohol consumption among young people of any city in Europe. The Brits demanded an apology but he said he would not apologize but he would be willing to explain his statement. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/oct/26/england-2018-world-cup-russia-bid

  79. Houndentenor says:

The IOC must move the Olympics. The longer they wait, the harder it will be.

  80. Drew2u says:

Not to mention Uganda. Let’s not forget both Russia’s Orthodox church and Uganda’s Evangelicals both paint gay people as “child predators”, first and foremost.

  81. A Monty Python sketch in the making

  82. That lead news anchor did too. Yup.

  83. nicho says:

Is it just mine or does Alexy Sorokin light up anyone else’s Gaydar?

  84. nicho says:

No one expects gay, naked Nazis.

  85. Ninong says:

“Would you like a World Cup where naked people are running around displaying their homosexuality? The answer to that is quite obvious,” he said.

“The Olympics and World Cup are not a stage for various views… not for Nazis, not for any other ways of life. It should be about football and nothing else.”
Naked people running around at sporting events (aka flashers) have invariably turned out to be exhibitionist heterosexuals. How do these “naked people” display their homosexuality? Do they put on a demonstration for the crowd? Or can the crowd tell the difference between a naked gay person and a naked straight person on sight? I guess he’s warning against gay people engaging in sex acts in the middle of the field. Probably sounds like a reasonable concern to these idiots.
So being gay is a “way of life” similar to being a Nazi? What an idiot.

  86. Scott Wylie says:

The Russian THUGS have no right to tell the worlds athletes what they can and cannot display on their clothing. I am trying to have this petition go viral, asking participating nations to add a small but visible Rainbow Flag to their athletes uniforms. 89. Monoceros Forth says:

They’re probably trading notes, these guys. That’s not entirely a joke. By now there must be some sort of connection between and discussion among right-wing Christianists in the U.S. and those in Russia.

  90. Thom Allen says:

Is it just me or are these people starting to sound just like rabidly anti-gay US religious republicons like frothy, Bachmaniac, Palin, Perry, members of NOM, et al. Maybe Moscow is planning a new tourist attraction, Russian Republiland.

  91. nicho says:

So straight naked Nazis are OK? Or gay clothed Nazis? Or gay naked Communists? This is getting more like a South Park episode every day.

  92. Indigo says:

“A gay naked Nazi?” Some phrases are coined to be uttered in scornful disbelief. That’s one of them.
