Putin says gays rape kids, audience including former Italian & French prime ministers laughs

In a rather disgusting bit of euro-homophobia, an audience including the former Prime Ministers of Italy and France laughed when Russian President Vladimir Putin “joked” that gays are permitted to have sex with children.

Putin made the comments today in front of the former president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and the former Prime Minister of France, François Fillon.

Commenting on former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s conviction on charges of having paid a minor for sex, Putin told a gather of former leaders that “People judge Berlusconi because he lives with women.  If he were gay, no one would care.”

In fact, Berlusconi was judged for paying a child for sex.

Putin is suggesting that society somehow let’s gays get away with having sex with children.

And of course, the added irony is that Putin is himself suggesting that Berlusconi paying a child to statutorily rape her is apparently acceptable behavior in Russia.  He’s suggesting that Berlusconi’s only crime was not being gay.

While Putin’s ignorance of matters of human sexuality are not surprising, particularly in light of his recent decision to crack down on Russia’s gay and trans citizens in order to buttress his own sagging support in the polls, it still is interesting that Putin is himself now commenting on gay matters, and expressing blatant homophobia.

Up until now, Putin left it to his henchman in the Russian cabinet and parliament to express his backwards beliefs on human rights.  The fact that Putin felt the need to slam gays publicly, in his own voice, at an event with former world leaders no less, suggests to me that Putin is sweating.

Putin’s desperation is only further evidenced by his hiring ace New York PR firm Ketchum to spread his lies, and buff up his gay-hating, genocidal-dictator-loving image here in America.

Top Russian LGBT activist Masha Gessen said recently that the attention the international community was giving to Putin’s anti-gay pogrom was making the Russian government think twice about whether to be more anti-gay in the future.  That means they know we’re watching, and it’s making them uncomfortable.

Other observers have suggested that Putin was caught off-guard that the world stood up to his legislative gay-bashing, and the threat the Russian government’s virulent homophobia now poses to the 2014 Winter Olympics taking place in Sochi, Russia in February.

The Olympic problem is in large part because numerous Russian authorities have threatened to jail gay Olympians, media, and guests attending the Sochi games in February of 2014.  This comes on the heels of news that vigilante groups have organized across Russia to kidnap young gay people, terrorize them, rape them, and even kill them, with the tacit, at the very least, complicity of the Russian authorities.

Yes, well, I doubt many athletes will show support for LGBTI rights anywhere near Sochi because the IOC has announced that if they do, they will be stripped of their medals and thrown off their teams – just like the athletes mentioned who gave a black power salute.

Better to boycott Sochi, it’s sponsors, and broadcasters. That’s what I’m doing and have been doing for over a month, now.

  2. The Ranter says:

Remember the boycotts in Moscow by the US? No. Not surprising I wasn’t born. Remember the two black US athletes putting on black gloves and raising their fists in defiance. i wasn’t born either but everyone remembers that image. Their are brave athletes out there and I say let them go and show what can Russia do when they try to arrest a a gay athlete who flies a rainbow flag on the podium??

  3. Hadzi Bajan says:

Interesting. If you translate the original article that the author of this blog linked to – the article is in french – there is no mention of Putin saying anything about “gays rape kids” as the author of this blog claims here. The translation of the original article (made with google translate) follows:

World Vladimir Putin signed a law late June condemning the “propaganda” of homosexuality to minors.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would not have been in trouble with the law if he was gay instead of increased female conquests, said Thursday President Vladimir Putin in a speech at Valdai Forum (North western Russia). “We judge Berlusconi because he lives with women. If he was gay, no one would take it,” Putin said at a gathering of former leaders, including former President of the Commission European Romano Prodi and former french Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

Putin’s statement provoked a burst of laughter in the audience.

The Valdai forum, organized by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, meets every year old leaders, journalists and foreign and Russian experts on Russia.

Vladimir Putin signed a law late June condemning the “propaganda” of homosexuality to minors.

The text has been criticized by many human rights in Russia, that its vague wording opens the door to a wide interpretation.

This law has caused a wave of indignation among the defenders of homosexuals in the world and calls for a boycott of the Winter Olympics in February in Sochi in southern Russia.
Seems John Aravosis is full of shit, people!

It´s not safe to go to Sochi !!!! Tell that to everyone, if you dress in a wrong color clothes(maby in you national flag colors) you can expect to be torture by neonazi grub and they do it under Kremlin protection, also if you have seen the new propaganda video of saying gay people molest children, then think how did they come up with that ideas, they are probably child molester them self so it not safe to bring children to Sochi. Sochi is not safe for anyone!!!!!!!!! Don´t go to Sochi!!!!!!!!

  6. Putin is in big trouble. No matter what he does now he will be a laughing stock. What a fate for a tough guy. What is he going to do if the athletes, gay and/or straight, protest while in the public eye. You know some athletes will fly a rainbow flag at the medals ceremony or something like that. Wachoo going to do then Pouty Putin?

  7. Luigi Proud DemoCat! says:

The first step is to boycott the Sochi Olympics and its sponsors. Any athlete who participates at Sochi will have LGBTI blood on their hands, just like the International Olympic Committee, Olympic sponsors, fans who travel to Sochi and spend their money there, and anyone who watches the Sochi Olympics and the advertisements that support it.

If Russia were doing what they are doing to women or to Christians, the Olympics would have been canceled long ago, but it’s only LGBTI people, so many are making excuses. Sacrificing LGBTI people is a small price to pay for those who will compete, enjoy, or make money on the Sochi Olympics.

He makes up all this propaganda and we have to go on the defensive to clean up his mess. It’s the same way here in the states. The religious groups and others would make up the most outrageous lies about us and we were put on the defensive having to disprove all the lies instead of telling them to prove it and back up their lies with evidence. That is what we should have done from the beginning but we had no ground on which to stand because we weren’t considered credible. Today is a different time and we can fight his lies.

Helpful hints for Windows users: If you view the page in your browser and the noisy ad starts, hit the key combination ALT-PRINT SCRN (it might appear as PRT SCR or similar). The key is almost always located above the arrow and scrolling keys. On desktop keyboards, it’s usually near the top, between the regular keyboard and the number keypad.

ALT-PRINT SCRN takes a screenshot of your currently open application and puts it on the copy/paste clipboard. Open your favorite graphics program — or even just Windows Paint. Paste from the clipboard, crop it if you like, then Save As a JPG. Medium quality is probably good enough, plus will save some bandwidth.

  35. Ninong says:

Yes, but it’s incorrect to call it statutory rape. It’s legal to have sex with a 14-yr-old in Italy provided the 14-yr-old consents. The age of consent is raised to 16 if the adult is in a position of authority (e.g., teacher, priest, parent). So even a 16-yr-old in Italy can legally consent to sex with a priest or a parent.

What is illegal in Italy is paying for sex with someone between the age of 14 and 17. Prostitution is legal but paying a teenager under the age of 18 is illegal. Berlusconi was convicted of paying a 17-yr-old for sex and for abuse of authority in the coverup.

The article describing Putin’s remarks says that he commented on Berlusconi getting into trouble for sleeping with too many women, then saying that no one would have bothered if he were gay. Slightly different sort of homophobic comment.

  36. Yeah, maybe it’s simply working and having SO many people contact you on a regular basis, but I do get surprised by people who just sort of assume you’re a jerk, rather than there’s been an honest mistake that you’re willing to address without being threatened first.

  43. Again, helpful thanks

  44. Ok that helps, that square seems to be a problem.

  45. Actually, no. Berlusconi didn’t get into trouble for sleeping with too many women. He got into trouble, got sentenced to jail, for paying an underage girl to have sex with her. Everyone in Europe knows why Berlusconi got into “trouble.” So I don’t accept the explanation that Putin was talking about sleeping around. Putin knew exactly what he was saying, he was talking about why Berlusconi got into trouble. And that was the child prostitute charge.

  49. Ninong says:

Well, let’s recap, shall we? Russia just passed a law making it a criminal offense to promote non-traditional sexual relations to minors. That’s a deliberately vague and broad law. Just a few weeks before Putin signed that law, he signed a new law making it a criminal offense to insult anyone’s religious feelings, or lack of religious feelings. This was in response to the Pussy Riot incident. Surprisingly that law would make it an offense to insult someone for their atheistic views. Obviously a law like that will be selectively enforced.

Also, let’s not forget that it was already against the law to insult a government official in Russia. That law was rarely envoked because it requires that the insulted official file a formal complaint requesting an investigative commission to look into the alleged insult and most government officials haven’t wanted to appear that petty because, you know, they were supposedly moving in the direction of a free democratic society.
Then, all of a sudden, the woman who is president of the Duma, and chiefly responsible for pushing the new anti-gay propaganda law, filed a formal complaint asking for an investigative commission to investigate alleged insults she says that strange Russian gay-rights activist made against her on Twitter. I forgot his name but it begins with an ‘A’ and John writes about him all the time. He suddenly turned all anti-Semitic and crazy for no apparent reason.

So that poor artist responsible for painting “Transvestites” could be charged under all three of those laws. He insulted two high-ranking government officials, he promoted gay propaganda and he insulted people’s deeply-held religious convictions. No wonder he decided to get out of Dodge as soon as the police picked up all of the management of the gallery and brought them in for questioning.

Wow… bringing in people for “Questioning” because of a political or artistic statement. Sounds a wee bit like Soviet-style politics to me.

  54. Ninong says:

Apparently the audience burst into laughter because Putin said that Berlusconi got into trouble because of sleeping with too many different women but if he had been gay no one would have paid any attention. Still homophobic but not exactly anything about raping children. He was knocking him for his prolific sex life.

As we all know, Silvio Berlusconi was convicted of paying a 17-yr-old nightclub dancer for sex and with abuse of power in a coverup afterwards. She was still 17 at the time he paid her for sex. The age of consent in Italy is 14 and prostitution is legal; however, it is illegal to pay a teenager between the ages of 14-17 for sex, punishable by up to three years in prison. His total sentence is seven years, so apparently the abuse of power got him more years than the original offense of paying a 17-yr-old for sex. He is still fighting the conviction.

It was still a homophobic joke on Putin’s part but it was about Berlusconi sleeping around and the very thought of Berlusconi being gay must have sounded amusing to the audience.

By the way, while browsing that French site, I learned that the artist responsible for that painting of Putin fixing Dmitry Medvedev’s hair while both are wearing women’s underwear, has fled the country and is applying for asylum in France. He painted that painting, titled “Transvestites,” back when Medvedev announced that he would not be running for a second term so that his boss, Little Vlad, could take the top job again. It was hanging in a small art gallery all this time without much attention until all the recent publicity surrounding the new anti-gay propaganda law. The police took the gallery’s owners and management in for “questioning,” and that’s when the artist decided that he needed to get out of the country fast. He left his wife and 2-yr-old daughter behind in Mother Russia.

  55. chris10858 says:

Just checking Ketchum’s site real quickly, I see several brands that are lgbt-friendly. Maybe we should start an email campaign against Ketchum and their clients as to why they would represent a man such as Putin who is actively working to restore communism back to Soviet Russia and who is also working to attack gay people?

I’ve attached screenshots of some of their clients as well as email contacts for the company’s CEO and Chairman. How about we start an email campaign… inundating them with emails about whether they support Putin’s new claims about gays are allowed to molest children and do they also support people’s children being taken by the state just for the parent being gay or lesbian?

Perhaps we could even mention that their other clients will be contacted? MAke the name Ketchum toxic as a PR firm…..

Unlike most Democratic leaders, who always seem to cower when Republicans bully them, I take the outlook that one should go up to the bully, pop him in the nose and let him know that we will not take this lying down.

  56. caphillprof says:

So often fagbashing is about the basher’s own sexual identity issues and not so much about the unfortunate victims. I’m guessing that Putin with his many shirtless sexual posturing photos is using his pogrom against the gays less for his sagging poll numbers and more like Terry Dolan and Ken Mehlman, etc.

  57. Bill_Perdue says:

Putin is digging his own grave. He can share it with Berlusconi.

Putin’s party, United Russia has a tenuous hold on public support in Russia because, like the government here, it serves the new gangster capitalist class and panders to the religious right.
Like the Democrats and Republicans United Russia and it’s allies have attacked the standard of living of Russian workers to increase the wealth of the super rich and the remnants of the Stalinist bureaucracy with measures that include:

    – the abolition of the progressive income tax;

    – enactment in the Duma of a labour code that restores the labour relations of a century ago, including a lack of rights for workers, and omnipotence for business and the bureaucracy;

    – introduced an antisocial package of laws that replace social benefits with minuscule financial compensation,

    – and are preparing acts to privatize education, depriving Russian workers of their Soviet era universal access to an education. http://links.org.au/node/8

These and other right wing policies by United Russia are creating the conditions for a massive push-back by unions and the left. http://links.org.au/node/3280

What happened in Madison and Cairo, Athens and Madrid is going to happen in Russia. Its only a matter of time before the Putin regimes ham fisted, pigheaded promotion of profit gouging by the rich creates a mass movement aimed at burying United Russia and restoring a workers state. As that happens our communities in Russia will have enormous opportunities to form power alliances and participate in the fight to bury the Putin regime.
