Gay protesters interrupt Princeton Club “invest in Moscow” meeting (video)

Gay protesters from the group Queer Nation disrupted a “Moscow investment” meeting today at the prestigious Princeton Club in New York City.

The meeting was meant to attract more foreign investment to Russia’s beleaguered economy, but instead became a lightning rod for the ongoing criticism of Russia’s draconian crackdown on its gay and trans citizens.

One by one the gay activists stood up during the meeting and publicly criticized businesses thinking of investing in Russia. The activist would then be ushered out by security, only to have another activist stand up to be heard. A total of three activists disrupted the panelists from the Moscow Department for Foreign Economic and International Relations.

“In my experience, anti-gay bigots are dishonest and corrupt as well,” said Queer Nation member Duncan Osborne to the panel. “What assurances can you give investors that their money will be safe in a country with minimal, if any, rule of law?”

At one point, the head of the Moscow foreign economic department laughed at the gay protesters’ concerns.

“This is not funny,” Mark Milano, another protestor, told the audience. “You should be divesting, not investing in Russia.”

At least one attendee in the audience decided to weigh in in support of the current “gay genocide” thinking in Moscow – a theory endorsed by Russian President Vladimir Putin – that recognizing the civil rights of gay people will turn all Russians gay, and no one will ever have a baby ever again, thus bringing the nation to ruin – yes, they actually believe this.

“Gay culture should not be promoted because it will destroy the population of the educated classes.”

(While Queer Nation thinks the man who yelled that was an American, his word choice, about the “classes,” sounded more Russian to my ears.)

After the activists were removed, one Princeton Club attendee joked: “Now let’s listen to the lesbians.”  And the audience dutifully laughed.

As you likely know, the Russian government, from Putin to the federal and state legislatures, has decided to gay-bash their way into popularity with new anti-gay laws that are helping to foment a climate of anti-gay hate in the country.  As a result, we’ve seen a string of anti-gay hate crime, including a series of vicious kidnappings.

Russian vigilantes show off a young gay boy they claim to have abducted and then doused with urine after entrapping him via a gay social media site. Reports from Russia suggest the boy may now be dead.

Clearly not the kind of business climate that corporate America is looking for, one in which their own employees will be threatened with jail, or worse.

it’s fascinating to me how the reaction to these activists is exactly what I experienced in the 70’s and 80’s (and still happens even now) when advocating for women’s equality. The condescending chortle, “oh those silly girls!” It’s the attitude of people in power whose main goal in growing and keeping their power.

Please out all the donators at that event!

As major financial supporters and profiteers of the Sochi Olympics, they’re homophobes and collaborators. End of story.

Comcast? They have a top-score 100 rating from the Human Rights Campaign on their Corporate Equality Index. So does Coca-Cola. These are not “homophobic corporations” at all. Please get your facts straight.

Well, at least they are not pretending that it is all about ‘protecting children’ anymore. There’s that.

Princeton doesn’t care about people being anti-gay as long as the money flows. Just see NOM founder Robert George who runs a whole conservative institute there.

It figures: Princeton, which is usually the default or third choice among the Ivies, would have the hots for communist capitalism.

true but we are supposed to be the envy of the world and our zeal for profit over integrity is driving us away from democracy and towards who knows what.

As far as I can tell, there are various Princeton Clubs in several cities. New York, Philadelphia, and others. They seem to be private clubs composed primarily of alumni, faculty, and students of Princeton. The club in New York also allows alumni of a few “select” other schools. I don’t know about the clubs in the other cities.
In other words, these are “the elite.” I don’t think that Princeton University has any official affiliation with these clubs, but OTOH, they are using the university’s name, and you would think that the university itself would not welcome such negative publicity with their name. You would think. We’ll see if Princeton sends out a press release disavowing any association with this club. I’m not holding my breath.

You and everyone else who’s interested can help start making it happen.

Unions are a good starting point. The recent AFL-CIO convention passed another resolution in support of ENDA and for supporting rights for the trans communities.

Make a motion in your union local supporting divestment and then pass it along to union retirement funds. (There are a variety of union funds and most of them are used to being socially involved and played a big role in the campaign to divest from South Africa.)

If you’re not in a union request to make a presentation before your local Central Labor Council and thry to line up someone to move for supporting divestment. Unions are reaching out to the left. “AFL-CIO Plans To Partner With Progressive Groups, ‘Open Up The Labor Movement.”

And you can get in touch with the LGBT AFL-CIO group Pride At Work to find local allies.

  18. clarknt67 says:

That’s an enormous task. I’m glad to see it spoken of. Now, who is going to make it happen?

  21. Well, communism seems to have fared even worse. I think the problem is governance and governments period. But it is true that “their” side has done an even worse job than ours :)

  22. LeeDorsey says:

Agree with BILL: #RUSSIAN Divestment should be happening for ALL LGBT, their friends and families! Now and forever until law changed.

On poverty and gender, can the government put infrastructure to help peple in poverty stricken communities. This wil enable them to find jobs and be less dependent on the welfare system.

  24. Bill_Perdue says:

Good move but our real focus should be on getting union and other retirement plans to divest from homophobic corporations like NBC/MSNBC/Comcast, Coke and etc.

  25. jomicur says:

Gee, them there scruffy gay activists aren’t looking so scruffy anymore, eh? I guess that’ll just be taken as proof of how insidious we are, or something.

  26. dcinsider says:

Does Princeton University have any official affiliation with the Princeton Club? If so, why are we not calling out the university to condemn this program?

While we are at it, just like we sought divestiture for South Africa, should we be calling on businesses to divest of Russia, at least as long as it continues to practice gay apartheid?

  27. jiff363 says:

    bitter much?

  28. I think that’s exactly right, actually. I think we’re dealing with folks who are either bi, gay, confused, or whatever, but for them, they “chose” not to sleep with someone of the same-sex, so they just assume that everyone has the same same-sex urges they have. And while some do, many don’t.

I guess I was too dumb to be scared off by the violence and eternal damnation.

  30. woodroad34 says:

Oh, I understand that (well, except for lesbian porn for straight men and gay slash fiction for straight women)…I just don’t think they “think”. These kinds of people are immensely short-sighted and I’m confident that they’re not really capable of thinking for anyone’s future–not even their own.

  31. Mike_in_the_Tundra says:

Throw me in with that bunch. It should bring the average I.Q. down about 15 points.

  32. BeccaM says:

I think it just goes to show that the amorality of the plutocratic class has no limits.

  33. BeccaM says:

Aye — apparently it’s only the threats of violence and eternal damnation that keeps the majority of straight people from turning gay and never having any babies ever again.

I think it might be one of the reasons they get into such a dreadful panic when they find out gay people do pair-bond as mates and happily have families and raise children.

  37. Indigo says:

Queer Nation! It’s good to know they’re out there acting up. It’s high time for some kick-ass action!

  38. chris10858 says:

This is great! Queer Nation rocks! Im sure that some people in the audience laughed it off but Im also sure that it made some question whether they want to associate themselves with a controversy like this.

I wish we could find out the names of any Princeton officials or faculty that participated in the forum. Call them [and the university itself] to task for effectively supporting a “gay apartheid” in Russia just as some business leaders supported black apartheid in South Africa years ago.

  39. woodroad34 says:

I never get the reasoning of gays destroying the population: either they believe that “god” put us on earth to mitigate over-population and they are, therefore, going against the will of “god” or they truly believe straights will stop having lots and lots of babies and become asexual. How can they be planning any future when they can’t get out of the box.

  40. ArthurH says:

I can’t understand why any American would want to invest in Moscow for any reason; not just the gay issue. The Russian government has a sorry record of pulling the rug out from underneath any business enterprise the government doesn’t agree with and which declines to cross the right palms with banknotes.

  41. Randy says:

This is a great way to send the messge out to everyone, including American business men and women
