Wendy’s hilarious 1985 Soviet TV commercial (video)

I think I’d posted this before, but with Russia all the news of late, and all of it bad news, as Vladimir Putin brings Russia back to the 1980s, or worse 1880s, it seemed time.

This is the iconic Wendy’s commercial from 1985.

You have to remember that 1985 was the height of the Cold War Reagan era. We were not friends with Russia, to put it nicely. And things in Russia weren’t going terribly well. The economy was backwards. TVs, for example, had a tendency to explode.  And people would give an arm and a leg to get their hands on Levi’s jeans, or Marlboro cigarettes – they just didn’t have those kind of “luxuries” available.

Actually, it’s funny re-watching this commercial now, almost 30 years later. I finally got the joke about “evening wear.” She’s carrying a flashlight because they had no electricity!

It was a vicious, and rather hysterical, commercial. A definite period piece.
