Russia defends anti-gay neo-Nazis, says 1,500 kidnappings never happened

In an astounding claim, the Russian government yesterday defended a neo-Nazi group for orchestrating nearly 1,500 mostly-anti-gay kidnappings across Russia in the past 18 months.

By some estimates, 24 million Russians lost their lives to the Nazis in World War II.

The Russians, angered over a British television documentary exposing a nationwide anti-gay kidnapping ring, then denied that the neo-Nazi abductions had occurred at all, claiming that there is no proof of the crimes, even though the abductors filmed their crimes and posted them widely on Russian social media network and YouTube.

And the videos, at least on VK, but some on YouTube as well, can still be found online.

Russian vigilante groups have organized around the country to kidnap young gay people and terrorize them, while the government mostly ignored them.

A young gay South African is attacked by Russian vigilantes, who filmed it and posted the video online.

The group conducting the kidnappings is called Occupy Pedophilia, and it has 30 branches across Russian and Ukraine.

Occupy Pedophilia goes online and lures (mostly young, it seems from the videos) gays for dates or sex, and then when they show up, they are abducted by a dozen men who often beat them, strip them naked, tie them up, shave their head, paint rainbows on their scalp, draw Stars of David on their chest (if they’re Jewish), force them to drink urine (to “cure” them of their homosexuality), and then interrogate them on camera about their “crimes.”  The videos are then posted online, and the gays’ lives are destroyed.

It’s beyond barbaric that the Russian government, rather than investigating these hate crimes, chooses to simply deny them. And then to claim that to the extent they did happen, they’re defensible.  Why?  Because the victims were supposedly “pedophiles.” In fact, most of the victims are gay, because Russians, who are supremely homophobic, tend to conflate the two issues.

The Russians are also claiming that you can find the same kind of crimes in Great Britain (and America).  In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a nationwide conspiracy to commit hate crimes against a minority in either the UK or the US, and certainly not 1,500 kidnappings in the span of 18 months (which Occupy Pedophilia claims).

But what’s more, in America and Great Britain, the government actually investigates crimes against gays, and pretty much everyone else.  The government does not, however, deny that the crimes even happened, video evidence to the contrary, and they most certainly don’t issue a defense of the perpetrators.

Not to mention, the perpetrators have repeatedly publicly admitted to their crimes. Why not at least investigate them if they’ve already confessed?

Video of Maxim Martsinkevich’s kidnapping and hitting a young gay man – the video was posted on But doesn’t permit users to post videos of violence against gays. You’d think this video alone would be enough to get Martsinkevich’s account deleted. You’d be wrong.

The St. Petersburg head of the group, Ekaterina Zigunova (the red-head in the photos below), recently permitted the UK’s channel 4 to film the abduction, beating and torture of a young gay man.  It was broadcast in Britain last week, and made its way online in America as well for a short while.

The video is gruesome. I’ve grabbed a number of screen shots from the video in an earlier post. Here they are (you’ll find much more about the video via that link):

I counted over 80 videos of these abductions on only two accounts last night.  There are countless more on that network.  The videos leave nothing to the imagination.  These are real. These are vicious. These are hate crimes.

Russian vigilantes show off a young gay boy they claim to have abducted and then doused with urine after entrapping him via a gay social media site. Until recently, the Russian authorities showed no interest in prosecuting the nationwide network of kidnappers that has operated for 18 months with impunity.

Oh, and the videos always include the faces of the perpetrators, so it’s not like its rocket science finding out who they are.

It’s interesting that the Russians have claimed that the issue is no longer relevant, as they recently arrested the head of the group, Maxim Martsinkevich.  In fact, the Russians refused to arrest him for 18 months while he posted proof of his crimes online.  And, they only arrested him a month ago after CNN reported on his crimes, and the fact that the Russians weren’t interested in stopping him.

Funny thing, though.  The Russians didn’t charge Martsinkevich with any of the nearly 1,500 kidnappings that Occupy Pedophilia claims to have committed. Instead they charged him with insulting the memory of World War II veterans.  God forbid the Russians actually enforce their law against kidnapping when a gay person is the victim.

Of course, the Russian government has no qualms about insulting the memory of World War II veterans via the government’s own praising and coddling of Nazis.

Russian vigilantes kidnap and attack a young gay Russian they first stalked on a local social media site.

After Martsinkevich was arrested, the Russians didn’t bother going after any of the other 30 Occupy Pedophilia chapters in the country.

And they didn’t bother going after Zigunova, who continues to look for volunteers to help her abduct more gays (she has several help-wanted ads up at, for assistance in pulling off the kidnappings, which they call “safaris,” since they’re hunting gays).

Here’s one current help-wanted ad on, seeking assistance for the abductions:

Another curious thing.  How can the Russians brag about arresting the head of the group, if they claim the group has done nothing wrong, and in fact has done good?  Which way is it – is Martsinkevich a villain or a hero?

Let me close with a bit more proof of the crimes the Russian government claims have never happened, and thus don’t need to be investigated.

What a bitterly backward awful country. super-user Maxim Martsinkevich posted on his account this photo of an abduction he did of a gay Jewish man, who is seen holding a dildo, while his head is shaved and painted with a rainbow, and Stars of David are drawn on his chest. super-user Maxim Martsinkevich posted on his account this photo of an abduction he did of a gay Jewish man, who is seen holding a dildo, while his head is shaved and painted with a rainbow, and Stars of David are drawn on his chest.

it all seems a bit homo erotic these guys wanting to have these fucked up gang bangs anyway

  2. Ninong says:

I mean “teenage,” because that’s the way it was reported. Were you there?
Vigilantism is not tolerated in a civilized society.

  3. F Young says:

Well, I’m not sure that Tesak in prison is a good solution for us, at least if it doesn’t include hard labor but includes free room and board, which can be a windfall for a writer. Prison is where Hitler wrote Mein Kampf. I have seen lots of manuscript pages from Tesak posted online that he claimed to have written in prison, but I don’t know if they drafts of his book since I don’t read Russian.

BTW I would really, really like if Google vastly improved computerized translation, including English-Russian translation. It would be a major advance to civilization deserving a Nobel prize

  4. Lectricz says:

If you actually go to the VR page, pic #313 is NOT a victim, he’s in dozens of pictures on the other guy’s page of his girlfriend, hanging out with them on apparently many occasions. Just click some links. These pics have been all over 4chan for years

  5. Lectricz says:

by “teenage” you mean “13”. I say let him get humiliated and beat. THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR TRYING TO FUCK A CHILD.

  6. Lectricz says:

OH NO! They poured water on the head of someone trying to fuck a 13 year old used as bait!
Catch someone trying to do it in America, and it’s loved by everyone and
called “Dateline: NBC with Chris Hansen” and gets #1 ratings for two years.
No sympathy for an adult trying to fuck a kid,=, PERIOD. I dont give a shit if you’re gay and Nazis come after you for that. This is like being mad at a dishonorable soldier killing Osama Bin Laden. Big fucking deal. One group of assholes in a fucked up country going after pedos. Good riddance. Stop trying to fuck 13 year olds. You’re lucky you didnt fucking disappear for that like you would from some parents catching you with their child.

How much longer before either internment camps or slaughter takes place? Will they use gas or just throw lgbt people directly into ovens? This scares the holy crap out of me. I feel so powerless to do anything. I want to do something but don’t know what to do. I am tired of feeling helpless. Surely as much economic clout as we have globally something can be done even if only to form an underground railroad to get people out.

  9. Ninong says:

He was released from prison the end of December 2010 and I believe he says he wrote it shortly thereafter.

  10. Ninong says:

In the BBC documentary, Vladimir is the bait and he’s clearly at least 19, maybe 21 or 22. Katya also tells the interviewer that Pavel used to be bait on previous safaris. Pavel looks to be about 21. Sergei, who appears to be around 20 or so was also previously used as bait.

  11. F Young says:

“Restructuring” it along the lines of “National Socialism” and elimination of homosexuality by recriminalization and intimidation.”

Is that what Tesak’s book is about? Did he write it in prison by any chance?

  12. Palto says:

These thugs do all of these vile acts against innocent people and then go back to their holes to start again the next day. How pointless and miserable their existences must be.

  13. Jackhoffsky says:

There are two things at play here. One is mentioned in the documentary where some of the above stills were taken. This is all a distraction against the failing economy and infrastructure, politicians and leaders. If it says anything about how much the country is crumbling, just look at the architecture at the Olympics, something the entire world will focus on… and rooms are falling apart before the games even began.

The other thing is separation from more Western, “soft” countries. We see the same ‘male-dominance’ mentality in Iran where homophobia is used as a vehicle to promote a stronger, more dominant manly figure in a geopolitical international version of the school yard “my dad can beat your dad” competition. In actuality it makes them look like simpletons (which they hate), in which they respond with more aggression. It’s silly and childish, but with the attention comes pride.

    It’s sick.

15 year olds are not prepubescents so they don’t qualify as pedophilia in the first place.

Pedophilia involves sexual interest in prepubescent children, not adolescents.

  16. Sweetie says:

It’s possible that it’s internalized homophobia, but it’s also possible that he’s a heterosexual thug who enjoys feeling powerful by bullying people. I don’t like the notion that everyone who harasses gay people is gay. That seems like pathologizing gayness — and homophobia/heterosexism get their power from the heterosexual majority — their heterosexual supremacy notions.

Research has shown that people can identify gay men at a rate better than chance, but not by much more than chance and the false positive rate is high. I suppose gay people tend to be better at this identification, but I don’t think it’s often clear at all who is and who isn’t gay.

  21. Ninong says:

In that BBC documentary, Katya tells the interviewer that she’s not concerned in the least if she entraps someone who is simply gay but not an actual pedophile trying to hook up with a young person. She calls it “killing two birds with one stone.” Their goal is to entrap pedophiles but they think all gays are pedophiles, so if they catch a gay person who is not a pedophile, what difference does it make? That’s what they all believe, including fearless leader, Little Vlad.

  22. FLL says:

Yes, the two claims do contradict each other. It gives me hope when the opponents are so stupid that they don’t understand how this contradiction destroys their credibility.

  23. Ninong says:

Ukraine opened an investigation of Maxim Martsinkevich only after the Iraqi government filed a complaint that he had abused an Iraqi national (see photo 250 of 3515 above). After the Iraqi embassy discovered that their national was intending to meet a teenage boy and not a teenage girl, they lost interest. However, Ukraine continued with their investigation because by that time Martsinkevich and his crew had already abused half a dozen Ukrainians, including one guy who was semi-famous for appearing on one of their reality TV talent shows. That’s when Martsinkevich decided to go on a vacation to Cuba.

The Russian government didn’t decide to do anything until after CNN did their broadcast. Once the Russians got involved, the Cubans picked him up almost immediately and shipped him back to Moscow, where he was greeted by the Russian police.

  24. BeccaM says:

Anti-gay bigotry at its most lame. This is just a troll whose bridge misses him.

  25. Exactly. His earlier photos often look awfully gay. These look like he’s decided he’s going to look “tough” and got his fashion advice from Glee.

  26. Tony says:

Propaganda at it’s finest. These are just russians having some fun with pedophiles

  27. BeccaM says:

Even more about the need to make “Russian” + “Gay” = “Automatically eligible for political asylum in all Western nations.”

  28. F Young says:

Another point to remember is that, on online contact websites, it is so commonplace for people to understate their age that readers usually assume that the person is actually older than the stated age. The same applies to photos; people assume that the photos were taken when the person was younger. However, for the Occupy photos, the bait is often not a minor and I wouldn’t be surprised if the posted photo was recent so the bait would be recognized during the encounter. So, the posted age would look even more like an understatement.

The fact that Occupy rarely posts ads from underage girls despite the greater prevalence of opposite-sex pédophilia suggests that their real mission is anti – gay instead of anti – pédophilia, as does the fact that some of the Occupy branches seem to target underage gays, either prefentially or equally.

  29. someone says:

Maxim Martsinkevich looks like Puck from Glee the absolute cretin. Seems to be the view held as the norm in Russia though. Blindly enforcing the views of their dictatorship. Brainwashed by the regime ha.

  30. karmanot says:

We need to start making loud noises about boycotting Russian tourism.

  31. BeccaM says:

Of course monsters like Scott Lively and his friends in the Russian government always like to present it both ways — in utter contradiction, as if nobody will notice.

“Oh these things just don’t happen, you all are lying” vs “Sure it happens and it’s just as bad in the West, so nobody should criticize Russia and other countries that attempt to outlaw homosexuality.”

  32. Frank Doyle says:

Russia should be ashamed of its treatment of gay people. The homophobic agenda initiated by Putin and his government is merely a smokescreen to distract Russians away from the injustices and economic hardships that a lot of citizens are currently experiencing in the country. The elite are using gays as scapegoats because Russian people are traditionally fearful and irrational when it comes to homosexuality (a hangover from soviet times). The same tactic was employed by the Hitler and the nazi’s against the jews. As long as the Russian people have an enemy within it keeps them distracted from protesting against the despot Putin. However, this is no excuse for the murder and violence, although given the atmosphere of homophobia sanctioned by the Russian church and state it is not surprising. This is how Nazi Germany began. I just hope that the international community doesn’t wait until a gay holocaust occurs before they act against Russia’s backward policies. Economic sanctions, boycotts etc are the only way to punish Russian authorities for these human rights abuses.

  33. Tom in Lazybrook says:

And that’s going to be a bigger problem for Russia’s PR hacks in St Petersburg than in Sochi. Russian LGBT activists live in St Petersburg. The clubs there have been attacked. Its not like Club Mayek (which is really a show bar primarily directed at straights) in Sochi. The reporters will get people condemning Russia’s treatment of its’ LGBT community if they go there. Russia is going to have a hard time barring LGBT people from Moscow, St Petersburg, etc. They won’t be able to manage this due to walling it off. The Gays are already there. Russia is going to have a very hard time spinning the situation in St Petersburg, or Moscow, or Samara, or Novisibirsk.

I think trying to put together a press conference with assorted protests during the World Cup this summer in Brazil might help this. Make an announcement. Its not safe for LGBT persons in St Petersburg. Show why and demand specific improvements such as arrests and appropriate jail sentences for those beating our people. An end to arbitrary arrests of LGBT protesters.

And we can also bring up the cases of racism with St Petersburg’s soccer fans and the shameful display of racism at the opening ceremony.

  34. Tom in Lazybrook says:

Oh it might get worse after the Olympic games, but we can certainly just substitute FIFA for IOC for our condemnation.

  35. Yep, FIFA will be coming, but that’s 4 years off. The more immediate issue is the Olympics. FIFA’s time is fast approaching :)

  36. Tom in Lazybrook says:

John, Again great work. But I think you could highlight this more by directing some of this at FIFA. St Petersburg will be the host of the 2018 World Cup.

Gay clubs in St Petersburg have been invaded by police who beat patrons senseless for no reason (no arrests of perpetrators). Violent gangs run amok with apparent license from the St Petersburg authorities, beating, kidnapping, and sexually assaulting Gay persons. To be fair, the St Petersburg authorities did arrest someone for punching a Gay rights protester two years ago. Unfortunately, they dropped the charges after a FSB doctor said six months later that she had no permanent injuries.

You might wish to reach out to Cyd Zigler over at Outsports ( I don’t know him, but he seems to be dialed into the athletes side of these things. The situation in St Petersburg should be put in front of FIFA and its sponsors.

I think that it might also be instructive to reach out to Brazilian LGBT groups to see if we can create some protests regarding this at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Perhaps a nice big protest against FIFA and its sponsors during the World Cup would be a good way to get everyone’s attention.

The saddest and scariest part of all of this?

  41. FLL says:

There are two common threads running through the propaganda being put out by the architects of Russia’s current anti-gay pogroms and their supporters in Western countries. The first is the notion that the violence taking place against LGBT people in Russia today is fabricated or, at the very least, exaggerated. A perfect example of this is a piece written by Scott Lively, who takes credit for facilitating the passage of Russia’s anti-gay propaganda law. Lively wrote the piece two days ago (link here) and had this to say about the Human Rights Watch video, which came out around February 4:

“So in conclusion, I say the Human Rights Watch video is just another piece of deceptive Machiavellian ‘gay’ propaganda, offered to prove the completely false narrative that all disapproval of homosexuality leads to hatred and murder. Whether or not any parts of the video are unstaged, the product as a whole is perpetrating a hoax.”

And now to the second common thread that is ever-present in the invective used by the bigots in the Kremlin and their supporters in the West: the U.S., Britain and other Western are just as bad than Russia when it comes to creating the conditions for widespread violence and hate against gay people. Here is an excerpt from the statement by the Russian embassy in London that John linked to at the beginning of his post:

“One could have easily whipped up such ‘documentary’ about a hunting season on redheads in the UK saying that ‘ginger’ people face unmotivated verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis… While violent attacks on homosexuals sometimes take place in Russia, just like in many other European countries, this does not mean that they are condoned, supported or, let alone, encouraged by the Government.” [Emphasis mine.]

Do you see? The situation in Russia is “just like in many other European countries,” or so the bigots would argue. But I will admit that the Russian government officials are trying not to turn themselves into overt jackasses here by using ridiculous hyperbole and claiming that Western countries like the U.S. and Britain are worse than Russia in terms of anti-gay violence; the Russian embassy officials only say that the situation in Russia is “just like” that in Western countries. And although Scott Lively is lying in his statement above, he uses the polite word “hoax” in his attempt to discredit the Human Rights Watch video. Only the Internet really pushes the envelope when it comes to psychologically questionable hyperbole. Where else but on the Internet can you find the U.S. described as “much, much worse” than Russia in terms of anti-gay violence. Where else but on the Internet can you read a thread about a Jewish museum director in Russia who had been beaten, had his museum vandalized and finally gotten fired by the Ministry of Culture… and then… and then… find a non sequitur in the comment pages of that post describing the U.S. and Western Europe as “sewers of racism, woman hating and homophobia,” without a word of criticism concerning the actual event described in the post. I’m afraid the Olympic gold medal for distorted, hate-filled invective
and bizarre hyperbole goes to… [drum roll please]… the Internet. [You may imitate a WWII Nazi commandant while delivering this line.] “Are we having fun yet?”

  42. James says:

I do get all that, but “as a one man operation, writing stories that aren’t even getting me good traffic, there’s only so much I can do” doesn’t strike me as a very good excuse. There has to be a balance between the urgent need to get the story out and the urgent need to protect the victims, regardless of whether or not the images are everywhere already. It doesn’t take that long to add a small blur to an image.

  43. I’ve started to do that. But the images are everywhere already. And it took me probably 6 hours yesterday just to write these two stories – and it took a good six hours to write just the one story from the day before – and the traffic I’m getting from them is negligible. And as a one man operation, writing stories that aren’t even getting me good traffic, there’s only so much I can do.

  44. Luke James says:

Why has no one done it to them , look if they are saying they need a place and people to help ? How hard would it be to pick up some of these scum and that bitch for certain , that would be great to see her and all the others get a taist of there own meds .

  45. James says:

I appreciate all the work you’re doing, but I really wish you’d blur the victims’ faces. They’re being victimized and outed again every time someone views the images.

  46. And actually, they went after him the same day that CNN did a big broadcast about the issue, noting the Russians weren’t acting. That IMHO is why they acted.

  47. Lawerence Collins says:

But Scott UnLively, said these attacks aren’t really even happening, but if they are. It’s gays beating each other up looking for sympathy.
Ok! Have to go shower now, even typing that made me feel dirty!

  48. FLL says:

That is very interesting given the current protests in Ukraine aimed at forcing the resignation of the pro-Kremlin mafiosi government of Viktor Yanukovych.

  49. MJL says:

Russian officials still “denying”. that’s cute and would work for anyone who doesn’t have an internet connection but clearly, they believe that the world entirely is stupid. there has to be a way to get this into the foreground because I doubt CNN will report it.

  50. Bethlehem says:

This is so horrifying and heartbreaking, I don’t really have words. Russia does not deserve to host Olympics. Their human rights abuses are vile.

  51. StraightGrandmother says:

I’ll make another observation. We only have their word that they are running solicitations from phantom 15 year old gay boys looking to hookup for sex. They say that the people they are kidnapping and torturing are responding to an underage ad. I don’t believe it. It is far more likely that they are running just generic hookup solicitations with the age of the phantom poster not even stated.

  52. StraightGrandmother says:

Actually, if memory serves Russia only went after Martsinkevich after Ukraine posted a warrent for his arrest for Occupy Pedophilia operations that happened inside Ukraine. If memory serves, that is the order of events. First Ukraine issued a warrant for his arrest, and only after Ukraine issued their warrent, then Russia followed.
