Darth Vader’s gay daughter speaks

Mary Cheney, the openly-gay daughter of former Bush administration Vice President Dick Cheney, gave an interesting talk at DC’s American University the other day.

While it was cute that Cheney referred to herself as “Darth Vader’s daughter,” the substance of the discussion was actually quite interesting.

Mary talked about marriage equality (aka “gay marriage), and her belief that the Republican party might finally embrace gay marriage by the year 2020 or 2028.

Mary also seemed to signal that she’s still on the outs with her conservative sister Liz, who ran for the Senate in 2013, and came out publicly against gay marriage. Liz’s comments at the time didn’t sit well with Mary, who is married to her longtime partner, Heather Poe — the couple have two children. Mary publicly blasted Liz at the time.

When asked this week whether she had mended fences with her sister, Mary responded: “I don’t have to answer that.” One would imagine that had the sisters put the past behind them, Mary would have laughed the question off with a “what family doesn’t have a little tiff once in a while.”

Mary’s response is vintage Mary,  and it’s what got her into some hot water with her own community back in 2004 when she refused to speak out against President Bush’s push to enshrine a ban on gay marriage in the US Constitution.

At the time, Mary was heading up the re-election campaign of her father, the then-VP. And while Mary’s sexual orientation was known in the gay community, the general public remained unaware that the Vice President had a gay kid. Which was interesting, as Mary had previously worked as the gay liaison at Coors, a company that had problems with the gay community in the past. So clearly Mary was already “out.” But she wasn’t out to the anti-gay voters she was wooing for her father and his boss, George Bush.

In any case, Mary was hardly a beacon of outspoken gayness back in 2004. But since that time, she’s been slowly coming out of her shell, culminating in her slap-down of her homophobic sister during Liz’s Senate campaign. Which ain’t nothing.

Having said that, let’s see who Mary actually supports for president, and who she donates money to, and raises money for.

    The Republicans have had ample time to get on board in one of the last great and final human-rights walls facing Americans. It has been a long, ugly struggle, full of plenty of heart-aches and tears. Instead of working to see this hurdle finally crossed – your party, as a whole, has done everything it could to stop gay marriage… and still you tell us it will be another five years before the Republicans “embrace” it.

    My question is, how does this traitorous, selfish, self-centered person, whose singular allegiance is to her father, find and keep a partner who’s stayed with her for so long?

    What is Heather Poe getting out of this?

    Is Heather Poe a Republican? What does Heather Poe want? Is she okay with being the black sheep at family gatherings? Is she fine with not ever being acknowledged as a person in her own right by the media because she’s a gay woman? Is she okay with her relationship being considered a shameful secret by the Cheney family?

    What person could tolerate all this for so long?

    And why?

    It puzzles me that she would want to stay in the Republican club. She’s an outlier in all respects except for her lineage.

    She’s presumed to be a conservative in all respects except that she wants LGBT equality. Usually, LGBT Republicans do not embrace such equality, which is why the Republican mainstream likes to have them in their ranks – it gives “legitimacy” to their arguments because a gay person is supporting them.

    The only reason why they are giving her the time of day is her high profile as being the daughter of their torturing, black-hearted, war-starting and country-ruining hero.

    This is the same argument made by countless “moderate” Republicans, Michael Steele comes to mind. Meghan McCain comes to mind. And what do they get for their loyalty to party over their own conscience? Only attacked and marginalized by the very people they continue to support, time and time again.

    Someone once said that democracy allows for the freedom for every person to become their own oppressor. Those who continue to support a party that does not have any interest in supporting them, and is actively moving further away from them, are only hurting everyone. Of course, this argument could easily be made about the Democratic party too, as it ever so surely drifts to the right. It is the grand failing of the two-party system. What happens with neither party actually represents a true majority of the People?

    Clarence was blasted because he is a hypocrite. He benefited from affirmative action and the attacked it. He made it over the bridge and then wanted to blow up the bridge so others couldn’t have made it across. And there is no evidence that he even thinks, never mind thinks for himself. He wasn’t named to the bench because of his judicial brilliance. He was named because he was a right-wing ideologue and black. It was pure GOP cynicism. “You want a black justice?     Reminds me of when Clarence Thomas was blasted and called a “uncle Tom” by many black advocacy groups. He, IMHO, appropriately shot back that those groups wanted to do to him exactly what they complained about, i.e., create a generalized platform that every single black person had to subscribe to like a robot. It was unfathomable that a black man might actually think for himself and take a different position on critical issues. Personally, I don’t care for Thomas’s approach on the bench, but I empathize with him on that particular ideal.

    Similarly, maybe Mary Cheney cares deeply for many of her conservative values AND her position on gay rights and equality. Maybe she has struggled with it many sleepless nights and has come to the conclusion that her best role is to continue to pursue both of those things in the Republican party. Maybe it is really hard for it, but she believes that is where she can be most effective and stay true to most of her values. and then, some trolls on a blog say “fuck her” simply because she doesn’t vote for the political party they want her to. Nice.

    For a little perspective, Mary took the job with Coors as liaison with the gay community to smooth over the issues that led to a boycott of that brand by gay bars in 1989-90 (give or take a year or so. It couldn’t have been before 1989 because I wouldn’t have been out yet and this information was in the bar rags in Texas so hardly a secret although perhaps not published so much in the mainstream press). So in 2000 when her mother denied she was gay on the Today show it wasn’t like Mary was still in the closet. (there must be a clip of that somewhere. It was bizarre because the question came up and Lynne just flat out lied.) Fast forward another four years when gay marriage is the centerpiece of the 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign on which Mary WORKED! I can’t forgive anyone who worked on that campaign, especially gay people like Mary and supposed gay “friends” like Mary Matalin. Not that any of them have actually apologized. At least Mary has decided to fight for her own rights even if she didn’t care much about those of any other gay people before she wanted to get married herself.

She has NOT advanced at all, and it was only when the gay bashing got personal (her marriage and her sister) that Mary got all gay and uppity. Because it impacted her directly. She could care less what impacts US.

    Hmmm, maybe Mary was feeling out the audience about her father. Maybe Darth is considering a run. After all, he has a rejuvenated (bur still black and cold) heart that could get him through more pillaging, hate mongering, torturing, treason and terrorism.

    Mary just needs to crawl back under her rock. I agree with the comments below. She’s just a self-serving parasite that serves no useful function. Other than to remind us about parasites in general, like the other members of her family.

    She seems like a crass opportunist to me. She’s gay when it profits her. She’s closeted when it suits her interests. She says she’s for marriage equality, but helped put her anti-gay, war criminal father in office. Quite frankly, I couldn’t waste any time wondering what she’s up to now. Like most Republicans, she has no courage, no character, and no convictions beyond her own narrow self interests.
