55 days after Duggar molestation made public, TLC cancels “19 Kids and Counting”

On May 21, police reports alleging that religious conservative icon Josh Duggar molested five underage girls when he was a teenager were made public.

Today, 55 days later, TLC announced that it will cancel the TV show featuring the Duggar family, 19 Kids and Counting.

TLC had briefly pulled the show from its programming schedule immediately following the announcement, but resumed airing the show later on. The cancellation comes after more than 20 advertisers — including General Mills, Walgreens and Payless — dropped the show.

However, while advertisers were seemingly able to take the hint that molestation is bad business, Duggar has retained a number of ardent defenders, including Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Duggar, who resigned from his position as a lobbyist at the Family Research Council after the allegations emerged, had previously been seen palling around with practically every major Republican presidential candidate, each of whom wanted Duggar’s stamp of approval as a person who understood Christian sexual purity as practiced preached by Duggar.

It was completely unsurprising that the same family values conservatives who are convinced, without a shred of evidence, that the gays are out to get your children had no problem asserting that Josh Duggar’s molestation of members of his own family somehow didn’t count as a violation of, you know, family values. As Kaili Joy Gray wrote in Wonkette following Huckabee’s defense of Duggar:

When he ran for president in 2012, Rick Santorum was happy to receive the enthusiastic endorsement and campaign appearances of the Duggar family. All the Duggars, even the littlest ones, who like him because he’s a “daddy” and also “sweater vests.” Has Santorum condemned his good friend Josh Duggar for SEXING HIS OWN SISTERS? Nah, Santorum’s too busy polishing his speech to announce that he’s officially running for president again — you know, for family values and The Children.

Mike Huckabee, who received the coveted Duggar endorsement when he ran for president in 2008, is the only politician who’s taken a break from values-preaching to address his close relationship with a child molester and his accomplice parents. And that, as we all know because of how it induced collective vomiting across America, was to point out that Josh diddling his kid sisters is old news, and Jesus has most assuredly forgiven him for that, so the rest of us should as well. MOVE ON, AMERICA.

So TLC finally did the right thing and cancelled a show that directly tied the network to a veritable sex cult. Good for them? I guess we’ll take it, even if it comes 54 days too late.

Now when is the rest of the Republican field going to cut ties with him, as well?

. . .that the gays are out to get your children had no problem asserting that Josh Duggar’s molestation of members of his own family somehow didn’t count as a violation of, you know, family values..” The rules are always different for these republicans when applied to themselves. They do not see themselves as pedophiles or rapists. Josh Duggar received “therapy” so they consider him “cured.” Most professionals know this isn’t how it works and this questionable “therapist” who had no real credentials that were recognized by professional organizations and as it turned out was a pedophile himself certainly disqualified him from being of any help to Josh Duggar. This was a sham and still is. Huckabee is another sham and has no business pointing fingers at gays and neither does Josh.

TLC is including Duggars in their child sexual abuse documentary. Another way to defend Duggars with their lies. I am boycotting TLC and any sponsors on any shows until they quit filiming any Duggar or any reason

I see no harm in that. Might be good if these home school children would be checked out regularly so that things like these could be avoided.

  5. BeccaM says:

I remember the reports on that. And likely that was the reason. Well, that, and the fact the whole family would be under the scrutiny of Child Protective Services…

  6. White&Blue says:

I remember reading that the reason why Jim Bob didn’t do anything, was related to the homeschooling laws of his state. The Duggars home school their children, and apparently homeschooling isn’t allowed if there is a sex offender in the family (or something like that). Mentioning nothing was a way to keep the right to home school. I’ll give you link to the story when I can find it.

I believe that the only person in the Republican field who actually believes he can become President is Jeb Bush – and he’s counting on daddy’s rich friends to buy the Presidency for him instead of actually caring at all about campaigning. The rest of them, every one of them, is in it purely because of the stupid amount of money being thrown around. Even if they are hopelessly polling below the margin of error on every poll, they’re still pretty much guaranteed to have millions of dollars incidentally splashed their way. People like Cruz and Huckabee also have side grifting, with commercial products they’re shilling while pretending to run for President. They’re taking their donors for a ride, and their donors are gleefully opening their wallets.

But apparently, the family research council (FRC) didn’t have their finger on it all…oh wait, they have their finger up everyone’s stuff–that’s their business.

That’s another point especially with the “The Future” conference that ultra-rightwing conservative Talibanians are holding in the Skyline Megachurch in San Diego; it’s not unlike holding it in Trump Tower–It’s corporate Christianity, which is buying something with no reward.

I meant something more along the line of his believing that “There’s a sucker born every minute”. He’s stupid if he actually believes his constant malfunctioning mouth or irrational attacks will get him the general votes he would need. For someone who wants social history to go back in time, he’s fairly ignorant of why we’ve gone into the future.

  11. koolaidyarn says:

    Apparently around 2002.

  12. BeccaM says:

Jim Bob Duggar (Josh’s father) in 2002 when asked his position: ” “Rape and incest represent heinous crimes and as such should be treated
    as capital crimes.”

2002 is the same year — from March through July — when Josh’s molestation became known to the family.

Needless to say, I think we all know Jim Bob would never have intended his own son to be subject to capital punishment for finger-banging his sisters and their family friend. Which is, of course, why they didn’t explain to police what had happened until 2006 and have been quick to deny that what happened was incest at all — even though by statutory law, it was.

  13. DoverBill says:

Anybody know exactly when it was that Josh “chose” to become a child-molesting pervert?

  14. 2karmanot says:

“but he can make money.” That’s it in a nutshell (pardon the pun). Most of the clown car is in it for the grifting.

  15. taxicolor says:

woodroad34, you make a good case but I don’t think Huckabee is ignorant nor stupid. I think he is cunning and evil. I think he knows exactly what he is doing. I have a strong feeling that he himself doesn’t believe what he says. He knows he can’t be elected president but he can make money. His rants, no matter how vile get him heard by a large audience of people willing to give him money and buy his books. He is the worst type of conman using hate and fear to reel in the suckers.

  16. woodroad34 says:

Mike Huckabee: a total vision of ignorance. That is to say “States can ignore Supreme Court on Gay Marriage” or “ignore Josh Duggar because Jesus has forgiven him” or how he just ignores facts and logic and…. well…he’s stupidly ignorant…not to mention a megalomanaical,, sociopathic idiot with superstitious, fantastical and immature leanings.
