Catholic group wants No on 1’s newest ad off the air because a Catholic mother wants her son to be equal

Yesterday, we posted the new ad from No on 1, the campaign to save marriage in Maine. Of this ad, I wrote:

Mrs. Dumont is a great messenger. She’s from Lewiston, a working class city with a large French-Canadian population. And, she’s a devout Catholic. These are important constituencies in Maine and Mrs. Dumont is asking them to do the right thing for her family.

A lot of Catholic mothers in Maine, including mine, are very upset with their bishop. And, I mean very upset. Bishop Malone has done great damage by leading anti-gay campaign.

Yesterday, we also learned that a hard-core Catholic group had the audacity to tell the campaign it had to take the ad off the air because it included a Catholic mother. US News and World Report posted the statement from the group:

“Everybody knows the Catholic Church is opposed to counterfeit marriages . . . . For homosexual groups to suggest that the Catholic Church believes otherwise is disingenuous, dishonest, and an insult to the intelligence of Catholic voters in Maine,” said Burch.

“We call on Protect Maine Equality to stop lying about our faith and to immediately pull this ad from the airwaves and from YouTube,” said Burch.

So, now the homophobic Catholics are attacking Catholics who believe in equality. Nice work, Bishop Malone. Has anyone asked Bishop Malone if this ad should be take off the air? Mrs. Dumont didn’t claim to speak for the Catholic Church. Nor does my mother. But, they are Catholics who support equality. That sounds more Christian than anything spewing from the anti-gay Catholic hierarchy.

Don’t forget, we’re having a MoneyBomb for Maine, trying to hit $1.1 million on No on 1’s ActBlue page by 11:59 PM on October 15th, tomorrow. Our ActBlue page is here. Let’s keep Mrs. Dumont on the air.
