Marine Corps head wants gays segregated

I would imagine segregation should go over really well with an African-American commander in chief.

The Marine Corps’ top officer said he would not force straight Marines to share rooms with gay service members if Congress repeals the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law and allows gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the armed forces.

Gen. James T. Conway, the commandant of the Marine Corps, told the Web site military.com in an interview published Friday that an “overwhelming” number of Marines would be opposed to bunking with someone of a different sexual orientation. As a result, he said, the Corps might have to ditch its double-bed rooms and offer single rooms to everyone.

This is what happens when you decide to lift the ban by waiting a year for a “study,” letting all the wackjobs take pot shots at you in a growing war of attrition. A show of weakness, which is the White House’s approach to ending DADT, does not usually end well.

And now, a few points for the good General:

1. For the guy in charge of the Marines, you sure seem awfully afraid. It’s not terribly becoming. As the White House would say, man up a bit.

2. Gays are already in the military, already sharing barracks with straight soldiers. The current DADT policy doesn’t exclude gays, it excludes openly gay servicemembers – big difference. So General Conway is saying that it’s okay for Marines to share sleeping arrangements with gay troops they don’t know about it, but it’s not okay to share them once you know what you’re getting. So we build trust by making the Marines suspect every barracks-mate of being gay. Uh huh.

3. Why does the General think the Marines are so bigoted that they won’t be able to follow orders? I just find that a disturbingly condescending view of his own men and woman.

4. I really want to hear people like Conway explain why integrating blacks was any different. And seriously, enough of the “being black is different from being gay” bs. That’s not even relevant. What’s relevant is that some troops didn’t like blacks, and some troops don’t like gays. It’s the same thing. Why was it okay then but it’s not okay now?
