DADT negotiations collapse. Susan Collins won’t vote for Defense bill tonight

UPDATE @ 6:09 PM: The Senate has adjourned. There will be no more roll call votes tonight. Perhaps that will give Majority Leader Reid, Senator Lieberman and Senator Collins some more time to negotiate. But, I’m really getting the sense that Collins can’t really cut a deal. McConnell won’t let her. We’ll see. I hope I’m wrong.

Breaking news via twitter. Senator Susan Collins is talking to reporters and it’s not good. Via Ed O’Keefe at the Washington Post:

Sen. Collins tells reporters she’s NOT voting tonight to move forward on #DADT if it comes up.

And, Chris Moody at Daily Caller:

Maine Sen. Collins just said she will support ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ repeal, but only if Senate resolves tax rate extension first

The hammer must have come down from Mitch McConnell. Collins does what he tells her.

To be honest, if Collins won’t vote for the Defense bill tonight, she probably never will. She’s had her chance to achieve equality. She’s chosen fealty to her GOP leader and the bullshit process arguments again.

Collins talks a lot about LGBT equality, but she doesn’t follow up her talk with action. She’s handing a victory to Elaine Donnelly and Tony Perkins. It’s disgusting.

One last thing: Collins only has this power because of the screwed up process for ending DADT. Pushing this decision til December was part of the scheme concocted by the White House and had the buy-in from at least some of our top “advocates” — but NOT the servicemember groups.

There’s still time to pass this legislation, this year, as promised. And, if it doesn’t happen, there’s a lot of blame to go around. A lot.
