Rick Warren: Being gay is like “punching a guy in the nose” or “arsenic”

Via Raw Story we learn that religious right mega-church leader, who sadly gave the invocation at President Obama’s swearing in, is back to his old hateful ways.

Warren, who famously supported Prop 8 in California four years ago – a referendum that repealed the right to marry for gay couples in the state – is yet again saying hateful, bigoted things about gay people. It’s in his nature.

Here’s Warren in an interview last night with CNN’s Piers Morgan:

Rick WarrenMegachurch pastor Rick Warren on Tuesday night said that same sex relationships would still be sinful even if they were natural.

“It wouldn’t bother me if there was a ‘gay gene’ found,” he told CNN host Piers Morgan.

“Here’s what we know about life,” Warren continued. “I have all kinds of natural feelings in my life and it doesn’t necessarily mean that I should act on every feeling. Sometimes I get angry and feel like punching a guy in the nose. That doesn’t mean I act on it. Sometimes I feel attracted to women who are not my wife. I don’t act on it. Just because I have a feeling doesn’t make it right. Not everything natural is good for me. Arsenic is natural.”

I’ve always said that the way religious right bigots talk about being gay, they must be gay themselves. Who else talks about uncontrollable yearnings, other than someone who has them himself?

And Warren brought up the Bible again.  Which is always interesting, since there is no “Bible.”  There are at least 15 different Bibles in English alone.  And the original Bible – which actually is a hand-picked compilation of various texts, some includes some excluded – was written in Ancient Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic.  And I got news for you, after 2,000, and that many translations, there is no “literal” interpretation that anyone can rely.

And in any case, the Bible says gluttony is a sin – in fact, it’s one of the Seven Deadly Sins – and Rick Warren is significantly overweight.  So it’s okay for Rick Warren to partake in his sins that are listed as the worst of the worst, but we can’t partake in our lesser “sin” didn’t even merit the “Seven Deadly”?

Oh yeah, I’d also like to know if Rick Warren eats shelfish and embraces slavery, since the Bible bans the first and loves the second.

Rick Warren is no different than the rest of the haters.  He talks prettier, with his aw-shucks accent, but the venom is the same.

What happened to freedom of speech! Fuck all of you that are hating on him. He is intitled to his opinion and if he thinks it is wrong then shame on him but he still has a right to speak it. You Americans are only happy when you have someone to moan and bitch about. Sort your lives out!

Don’t like what I just wrote???

    Sue me!

  2. Good God! If only that were true about Bradley Manning. I would love to see PBO issue a full and unconditional pardon of PFC Manning and end this national embarrassment so reminiscent of Abu Graib. Free Bradley! All five feet two inches of him!

  3. This fellow breathes the same air I breathe here in Orange County, California and I must say he is certainly a major waste of that air. He is definitely seriously more stupid than the average fat pig.

  4. Sweetie says:

Like he has ever had any interest in reading the Bible. He’s like his followers.

  5. Jim Olson says:

    That would be horrible.

  6. J.W. Swift says:

Funny, I thought he WAS a poisonous snake!

  7. Butch1 says:

The democratic party has fallen to the point that they were made for each other.

  8. Butch1 says:

It would be more interesting if he had child porn on it.

  9. Butch1 says:

This would be just like him to pull a stunt like this. A final thumbing his nose at us.

Here’s an idea for the next republican president-elect:

Since you’ll want to gather those of like mind around you on such a momentous occasion, invite Rev Warren (aka Fatass Grifter) to give the invocation at your swearing in ceremony.

Oh wait… that’s already been done.

  12. Bob Parker says:

A bigot is a bigot is a bigot. Leopards don’t change their spots.

10 years ago, Warren was claiming that gays are sinners because what they do is “unnatural” and “an affront to God”. Now he says it may be natural, but still a sin, because it doesn’t fit into his world view.

Rick Warren will find ANY reason to demonize us. He is a bigot hiding behind his Bible. He should just go hide in his church, let his congregants suck up to him and leave the rest of us the hell alone!

  13. Sweetie says:

No, but you seem to have missed mine.

  14. A punch in the nose? Arsenic? How about a fist sandwich and some old lace to take off a few pounds off this yo yo.

  15. tedhayes says:

“Arsenic is natural.” Funny, so are fundamentalist assholes.

  16. mike31c says:

He’s certainly the expert on gay sex and the gay lifestyle. I wonder why?

  17. karmanot says:

Of course Obama knew. It was a typical Obama political toady move. My guess is that Rohm Emmanuel, who also hates gay, was behind the play.

  18. karmanot says:

I would question Warren’s declaration that he does not act on his ‘natural’ impulses. After all, Christian haters take hypocrisy as a virtue. I imagine that Warren knows and visits every glory hole with in a hundred miles of his Brokeback church.

  19. karmanot says:

Agreed, Abrahamic religions with their fetish for monotheistic male patriarchy are a curse and loadstone on human advancement.

  20. arcadesproject says:

whew. is that guy getting more rancid or is my sense of smell better?

  21. karmanot says:

This time Obama will go for diversity and pick a woman—-say, Joyce Meyer. You may have seen her ministry of the TV’s. She has a powerful, absolute certainty, typical of the small minded and looks like a prison matron. She’s one of those ‘hate’ the sin and kill the sinner types.

  22. karmanot says:

And do it while twirling a poisonous snake!

  23. karmanot says:

Warren was Obama’s pick—- the worst of the lesser evil.

  24. karmanot says:

About the three times betrayal——Republicans can’t count, remember. I think that one of the few time in which Jesus expressed loathing was for hypocrites: (Matthew 6:1-6 RSV)

  25. karmanot says:

Did you really miss the point?

  26. Sweetie says:

    He’s not gay.

  27. Sweetie says:

    Thanks John.

  28. dcinsider says:

    Well said.

  29. caphillprof says:

We are being vilified by obsolete religions. These desert religions are stuck in Iron Age ignorance and superstition. They don’t speak to the human condition in the silicon age.

  30. dorothycharlesbanks says:

I discovered during the 1988 presidential campaign that Warren is a liar. As pastor of one of those rich mega churches, he will lie and betray Jesus three times before the roosters crows. I question his love of money over his love for Jesus Christ.

  31. RyansTake says:

Please, bigots, keep talking. You bring more people to our cause every day.

PS. Remember when we all were told to accept Rick Warren because he was the “reasonable” Evangelical? I’m so glad we never cowed down to those voices. Warren is a bigot and it an embarrassment that he was ever allowed to be associated with the Democratic Party.

  32. Skeptical Cicada says:

Correction: Was deliberately chosen by Barack Obama to deliver the invocation at his first inauguration in a naive gambit to make gay-hating white social conservatives love the new black president.

  33. CSStrowbridge says:

The Bible clearly says that true Christians can drink lethal poisons and not be harmed. This Rick Warren should be forced to prove he is a true Christian.

  34. Badgerite says:

Well, that ‘s nice that he does not act on his ‘natural’ impulse to cheat on his wife but that is a private virtue. Is it not? The state really doesn’t have anything to say about that one way or another. It does not legally proscribe that behavior and whatever consequences that you bear from such behavior are personal and private. (except, maybe, in a divorce proceeding). What he is advocating is that the state proscribe behavior (gays getting married) not for any rational state purpose but merely because Rick Warren doesn’t like it because, ……….The Bible. That is a violation of the Equal Protection Clause, pure and simple. And the Constitution is our social and political contract with each other, not the Bible.

  35. Our Christian president knew, oh wait he’s a Muslim.

  36. FunMe says:

That guy has NOTHING to do with Christianity. Everything he “preaches” is hate and nothing he knows about. Now that marriage equality is getting closer, “his kind” is short-circuiting right in front of our eyes and I like it, I really like it. :-)

  37. Jim Olson says:

I would be very disappointed if President Obama selected this bigot to give the invocation at the Inauguration again. But I wouldn’t be surprised.

  38. emjayay says:

John, you are totally awesome. Now, reread that post and edit it a bit here and there please.

  39. basenjilover says:

there are approx 168 verses on gluttony… I left Rick Warren an email message regarding that subject and strongly advised him to read them.

  40. Rick Warren is NOT a Christian. He is in the “Jesus” business to make money.

  41. benb says:

Progress. Big Rick accepts that being gay may be a ‘natural’ feeling.

  42. cambridgemac says:

Rick Warren is either an asshole or a sick motherf*cker. Or both. We all knew that. The disturbing question is: Did Obama not know this? Or was he pretending not to know? Or what?

  43. karmanot says:

Oh yes, Pastor Rick Warren, one of the minds behind kill the gays in Uganda.

  44. AdmNaismith says:

I wish Anonymous would hack this asshole’s bank accounts and sent all his money to children in Africa or wildlife charities.

  45. BeccaM says:

Yet another gay-hating bigot… and it wouldn’t surprise me if his stated desire sometimes when getting angry is to punch some guy in the nose is because what Rick really wants is to kiss him.

  46. josephebacon says:

I hope Anonymous hacks into Slick Rick’s computer and finds Rick’s account on Manhunt.

  47. FatRat says:

You won’t find hatred of Gays in the 10 Commandments, unless the GOP chisels a new one.
11th Thou shalt not speak ILL of any fellow Republican.
12th Thou shalt not speak WELL of any Democrat.
13th Thou shall worship the money changers.
14th Thou shall loathe Gays, Science and Empathy.
15th Double down on the Gays.

  48. Snaggletooth says:

Naw, he’s gonna let Bradley Manning out and have him give it a go. Remember now that he’s been elected to a second term he’s gonna be more liberal.

  49. lynchie says:

You beat me by a few seconds. what a totally reprehensible, unchristian mother fucker.

  50. nicho says:

I wonder if he’ll be headlining Obama’s inauguration again. Maybe Obama will go for Tony Perkins this time.
