Lindsey Graham (R-Closet) having vapors over including gays in immigration bill

Lindsey Graham: Immigration hypocrite?

“Confirmed-bachelor” GOP Senator Lindsey Graham (R-Closet), who has no plans to marry Ricky Martin, is having the vapors over President Obama’s push to include a fix for binational gay couples in the immigration reform debate.

As you know, the legal marriages of gay couples are not recognized by the federal government because of the DOMA law. Therefore, the non-American spouses of gay Americans risk deportation as their marriage is not a path towards getting a green card and subsequent citizenship.  And it’s causing real harm to gay families.

Senate Democratic negotiators Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, Bob Menendez and Michael Bennet threw gays under the bus in order to reach an immigration compromise with Republicans who were desperate for any deal in order to save their party from permanent minority status.

Lindsey Graham chick-fil-a

Lindsey Graham celebrating “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” (seriously)

President Obama, to his credit, included a fix for binational married gay couples in his immigration reform principles yesterday.  Obama’s proposal has now upset one of the Senate’s biggest drama queens, GOP Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), whose long-time unmarried status, and fey demeanor, has made him a subject of ongoing speculation regarding his own ambiguous sexual orientation.

For a staunch family values advocate, Lindsey Graham is oddly disinterested in having a family of his own, or even in expressing any interest whatsoever in the opposite sex.  Lindsey Graham is what I like to call a “closeted heterosexual.” His heterosexuality is buried so deeply that it never seems to manifest itself, and he never seems to want to talk about it; something rather unique for actual heterosexuals. Thus he is Lindsey Graham (R-Closet).

Why discuss Lindsey Graham’s sexual orientation at all?

Were Lindsey Graham gay, his hypocrisy in constantly bashing gays legislatively (Graham consistently has little better than a zero rating from HRC), while being a closeted homosexual, is something that many in the gay community, myself included, would consider fair game for public discussion.  While it’s one thing to protect gays in the closet who are doing no public harm to their own community, it is quite another to permit someone who is themselves gay from repeatedly causing harm to millions of gay Americans.

So while the jokes about “Miss Lindsey” are cute, and in my view fair-game, they are also deadly serious.  Lindsey Graham needs to come out with a better explanation as to why a 57-year-old man, who works in one of the biggest old-boy back-slappin’ girl-lovin’ environments in the country (I worked on the Hill, and US Senators are hardly a celibate bunch), and who, frankly, sounds and carries himself gayer than any gay man I know, never shows any interest in women, yet has a very strong interest in bashing others who share his apparent disinterest in the opposite sex.

Real people’s lives and families are involved and at stake here.  And it’s time we stopped treating southern bigots like Lindsey Graham with kid gloves.  If Lindsey Graham wants to continue demonizing our relationships, then he puts his relationships, or lack thereof, on the table as well.

If Graham is not queer he sure missed a damn good chance, maybe he’s just a celibate that just happens to be a little light in the loafers.

  2. andy says:

So what about gay men referred to as “bears”? They do not sound or act as my more flamboyant homosexual friends sound and act. If their true sexual orientation manifests itself through voice and mannerisms does this mean they are really straight?

  3. Andy says:

What an article John! It’s nice to be able to write something without any citations to credible sources. Your article is nothing but speculation. This isn’t supposed to be a news site is it? You do the gays a disservice.

  4. dafrieze says:

Not being gay, I have two questions: (1) Are you absolutely sure Graham is gay? (2) Why wou;d you want him?

  5. GoFig says:

Only a matter of time before Lindsay’s bathroom stall “wide stance” comes to light.

  6. GoFig says:

HIs motivation for how he votes is just as important as to how he votes. The man is voting to prove he not gay. Outing him shuts down his need and ability to use anti-gay legislation to prove a lie to himself and the country.

  7. GoFig says:

Find me one heterosexual guy who “hates woman” that doesn’t use the word “whore” to describe them and you may have a point.

  8. dom says:

    what about asexual?

  9. maggie says:

Oh, come on, now. Not every homophobe is a closet case. Not every jerk is a closet case. And, no; someone being intrusive and oppressive about my relationships doesn’t make it okay for me to be that way about his.

I couldn’t care LESS who he does or doesn’t sleep with. It’s not okay for him, or any dyed-in-the-wool active hetero, to discriminate.

    Let’s be bigger than that.

  10. Ron Mexico says:

A person can be asexual and gay.

  11. It”s none of our business where he sleeps or with whom. Let’s stick to how he votes in the Senate. As long as he votes against gay rights, our knowing what he does on his nights off is beside the point.

  12. Sonnie says:

Duh! Of course Lindsey is gay. He’s over 40, unmarried and living in the South. I’m surprised he didn’t have a “marriage of convenience” to cover it up like most gay Southern politicians. I’m originally from SC and so embarrassed that Mean Queen represents my home state. Wish some activists with time and money would go camp out at his office with signs that say “Come Out of the Closet, Lindsey” until he does. I really just want to see his conservative supporters (especially religious types) get upset that they voted for a gay guy. Wish Lindsey could have been outed like twenty years ago.

By the way, Rick Quinn (runs a political marketing firm in Columbia, SC) is also gay. He’s married, but gay. Somebody out him. His firm is the one behind Joe Wilson (I think that’s his name) that shouted out during the Pres. Obama’s speech during his firm term. I live out west now and would never, ever live in the South again.

  13. renatastar says:

First time I lay my eyes on Lindsey I knew she was gay. I don’t care about the fact. It’s just terrible that he has spent his political life supporting legislation that have hurt millions of Americans.

  14. 4teepee says:

Republicans who think they can ever get the votes of the third world underclass with immigration law changes are deluding themselves. The Democrats will always offer more goodies. However, if gays have problems, so do blacks regarding immigration, particularly Hispanic immigration. Hispanics are terrorizing blacks out of Los Angeles area communities. The national media has largely censored the matter, but the Los Angeles Times has reported on it. Click on

  15. wmforr says:

I can only agree with you up to a point here. Precisely because “having the vapors” is not only out of the masculine norms, but it is certainly way out of today’s feminine norms. It is anachronistic. It brings images of the Old South and racism and misogyny and everything the Republicans are trying to insinuate with out declaring it outright.

  16. wmforr says:

And misogynists tend to be homophobic. It still boils down to fear of one’s own sexuality. Your dick tells you want to be with a woman… up until orgasm. After that, you want to be with “da guys” 24/7–but no homo.

And when you’re with them, a major topic of conversation is “my wife’s a bitch”. Whereas the “my wife is my best friend” types, from my experience, hold no animosity towards other loving relationships.

  17. Kenneth says:

I have no doubt what-so-ever that this Lindsey fella is gayer then most. He walks, talks, and holds himself gayer then any gay man I know. As are many in the senate and congress hide their own interest in same sex mixes.
Time for every gay human on these American shores not ask but demand equal rights under federal law. First and foremost “Marriage” is a legal paper, nothing to do with God or religion, so get over it and make it possible for all men and women to love openly who ever they love freely.
    Love and Peace to all

  18. karmanot says:

    It’s called misogyny.

  19. colleen2 says:

Interesting. There are plenty of heterosexual guys who hate women

  20. Carolyn in Baltimore says:

I agree except for this: using the term ‘having the vapors’ and ‘Miss Lindsay’ are misogynistic. If he’s a hypocritical closeted gay man, he should be criticized and outed. But using his effeminism to insult him not only insults women but also all effeminate men out there. Nothing wrong with being more or less masculine or feminine. But insulting people because they act outside of general masculine norms is not how to insult people.

I only hope that soon so skeleton comes falling out of his closet creating a huge gay sex scandal of proportions from which he will never recover. He will deserve to leave the Senate in shame for all the bad attention, derision and suffering he has caused gays over the years.

  26. Skeptical Cicada says:

I agree with John, but there’s another angle to this.

Why are Lindsey Graham and John McCain making big public statements about excluding same-sex couples from the bill? The answer, I think, is not because it is certain that the GOP would sink any immigration bill that included the provision. Quite the opposite. I think they are speaking out because they know that enough GOP members actually would have to support an immigration bill even if it included the provision. This is a massive bluffing and intimidation effort to try to bully the ever-stupid, ever-spineless congressional Democrats into folding and keeping the provision out themselves. And because congressional Democrats are ever-stupid and ever-spineless, they have instantly capitulated to the bluffing and bullying instead of challenging it or, even better, ignoring it.

  37. FLL says:

Lindsey’s attempt to keep the rights of same-sex couples out of immigration reform is clearly the last straw. Out of the closet he must come. I suspect that even fundamentalist Christians are exasperated with Lindsey. I can imagine the Christianists yelling at Lindsey behind closed doors: “Keep your mouth shut, Lindsey, you damn [choose an appropriate slur], and let someone else do the talking!” It’s painfully obvious to everyone from one end of the political spectrum to the other that Lindsey’s tragic, ironic, pathetic queer-bashing will blow up in his face at any moment now. His actions are beyond hypocrisy; they are suicidal lunacy. Lindsey is the poster child for outing gay politicians who seek to do harm to gay and bisexual people through government policy.

I never want to see greasy bags and Lindsay Graham in the same sentence again. Shudder.

  42. AnitaMann says:

I never want to hear Lindsay Graham and crack in the same sentence again.

  43. Hue-Man says:

One of the signs that the “rational conservatives” are trying to put life back in the rotting corpse that is today’s TeaParty/GOP would be Lindsay Graham coming out of the closet. The far-right christianists will remain in control as long as people like Graham are unwilling to stand up and explain to voters why these nut-jobs are a fatal disease for conservative politics. From what I’ve seen, he’s too gutless on both counts…he’d rather get his cushy corporate directorships and hire “luggage-lifters” in his retirement.

  44. karmanot says:

“I have never ever met a straight guy that effeminate after a career in the military.: It’s a certain tradition in old Southern families that ‘those’ sons wear the uniform as a kind-of hologram of masculinity— either as a priest or the National Guard. A political career assures that the latter won’t lead to actual service, the former assures secrecy of the Parish hard drive.

  46. Gaylib says:

  47. Naja pallida says:

Lindsay Graham’s questionable sexuality aside, it is sad that suggesting equal rights apply is automatically enough to get Republicans to torpedo anything sensible.

  50. karmanot says:

“greasy bags” does bring Sarah Palin to mind.

  51. I Hate SC says:

I agree with you completely. I work with Graham’s staff occasionally here in SC (where I hope to leave as soon as possible and never return) and I can tell you he likes to hire cute twenty-something boys though I suspect he actually has a fetish for ex-military senior citizens.

  52. karmanot says:

    McCain has a secret.

  53. karmanot says:

“While it’s one thing to protect gays in the closet who are doing no
public harm to their own community, it is quite another to permit
someone who is themselves gay from repeatedly causing harm to millions
of gay Americans.” COULDN’T AGREE MORE! It’s time for Scarlet O’Graham to drop her fan.

  54. MyrddinWilt says:

I have never seen a hater of any sort who wasn’t desperately trying to gain acceptance with what they consider the ‘in group’. Sometimes it is focused inward like Clarence Thomas or J. Edgar Hoover and sometimes it is focused on a separate class – like Helms and Thrumond embracing racism. They climb up to the top by walking over other people.

But when the object of someone’s hate is sex then it is almost invariably because they fall into a class that they personally define as ‘pervert’.

Graham was a son of a working class family who worked his way into the establishment through the military and then politics. I have never ever met a straight guy that effeminate after a career in the military.

I don’t much care whether Graham is gay or not. What I do care about is his rather obvious attempt to ‘prove’ he is not gay by promoting gay bashing bills. It seems more than fair to point out that far from proving that he is straight, Graham provides pretty strong circumstantial evidence that he is gay and in the closet.

  55. S1AMER says:

Okay, enough of all this neverending crap! Is he or isn’t he? If he is, then there’s somebody, somewhere who should be outing him. Now. Today. It’s your duty to your country, whoever you are.

(And — wow! — half the fun of Little Linday finally being outed would be McCain’s head finally exploding. I hope there’s a camera nearby if that happens!)

  56. cole3244 says:

someone should do a commercial with graham as the poster boy promoting gay rights, wouldn’t that be a hoot for the reds in sc.

  60. Oh yes.

  61. BeccaM says:

You do. Lindsey made a big show of being seen there back during the kerfuffle protests when Chick-Fil-A’s CEO re-spewed his “I’m a conservative Christian, so I hate gays” schtick again, and all the anti-gay bigots turned out in huge numbers to oppose the boycott.

The Wasilla Chillbillies also have a photo floating around there, of them both clutching greasy bags of CFA, which I doubt either of them planned on actually eating.

Wait a second! John, do I see him eating Chick-Fil-A???????

  64. I’ve never met seen anyone as outwardly gay as he who was asexual or heterosexual. I’m a firm believer in a genetic component to homosexuality, and thus it’s entirely reasonable, and probable, from my experience, that in some people, many people, their true sexual orientation manifests itself through voice and mannerisms.
