Boy Scouts propose new policy: Gay Scouts okay, gay adults still pedophiles

So the Boy Scouts are proposing a new policy: Let gay troops join, but once the troops grow up they all become pedophiles and have to be banned again lest they rape all the young Boy Scouts in their midst.

How progressive of them.

Think about it.  The Boy Scouts are saying they’re willing to train and mold young gay Scouts, but they still realize that once those Scouts grow up, they’ll be predisposed to raping young boys, apparently, so they’ll become pariahs again.  Then why accept them in the first place if they’re all future pedophiles?

The Boy Scouts is still a hateful bigoted organization that apparently thinks gay men are all pedophiles.  May they lose all of their corporate funding.  Bigots.

I don’t have time to deal with the Boy Scout homophobes today.  We have more important fish to fry.

But just wait until next week.  The Boy Scouts are an archaic throwback to America’s racist, intolerant, homophobic, bigoted past.  And if they want to cling to the 1940s, let them.  But good luck holding on to any corporate sponsors other than Chick-fil-A.

Since it seems that most anti-gay thinking is based upon ancient scripture, perhaps we should use another ancient text as the basis for “Stone Thrower Scouts”; those would be the ones who were conceived by two parents who are without sin (or at least that is what they think) and want to raise little bigots to also think they are also without sin. They could go around preaching separatism and stoning all those who think they are FULL OF SHIT.

  2. San Juan says:

Mike in Houston: Remember, BSA is now for both boys and girls. Do we see an outcry about this issue from the straights?

  3. San Juan says:

Seems like the best idea would be for these folks to start their own scouting organization. In Europe, it’s not called BSA. It’s just Scouts. That way, all the gays could just be together, and the straights likewise. Everyone happy.

  4. gaylib says:

I say more because there is an element of conversion therapy here. The implication is that gay kids can be allowed in the hope that scouting might change them.

  5. cole3244 says:

people don’t have a choice about being gay ( its genetic), people do have a choice about being a bigot ( its stupidity).

  6. Max says:

A criminal in waiting? On what basis? My sexual orientation? -_- YOU are the one admitting to prejudice here, perhaps you are the “criminal in waiting.”

[The word prejudice refers to prejudgment: i.e. making a decision before becoming aware of the relevant facts…] You are, at minimum, admitting to ignorance and poor decision making skills.

Right-wingers run around saying that they are afraid that “homosexuals are rapists,” because they don’t understand homosexuality and as a result they mindlessly echo bigoted stereotypes. Can’t you see you are guilty of the exact same thing with pedophilia?

  7. Sweetie says:

As fond as people are of acting as if people are monsters because they have a mental disorder, I would like to see hard evidence that pedophilia also involves an impairment of willpower. If that’s the case, it definitely should affect how they are treated in society.

  8. Sweetie says:

Go whine at the Supreme Court, troll

  9. karmanot says:

Yep, his name is Max—-very Creepy.

  10. karmanot says:

This repellant pedophile troll is proud of it.

  11. Max says:

Haha, Christian I am not. I dislike the RCC as much as you do…

  12. Max says:

karmanot, I am sure the FBI is aware of our group. It would not surprise me if they have a mole inside it. This is fine, as we are committed to legal and ethical behavior. Troll harder next time. :)

  13. Max says:

Naja, one does not need to have a relationship to feel attraction. Would you consider someone asexual until they form a relationship with a person? I completely agree that having a relationship with someone incapable of legal consent is abuse.

  14. Naja pallida says:

Friday on probably busiest news day in the last year. It almost feels like they had come to this decision months ago, but were just waiting on a time they could announce it and have it drown out.

  15. Naja pallida says:

I don’t even know how to respond.

Having a sexual relationship with someone incapable of legal consent is abuse, by any measure, in our society. This isn’t the 1890s, despite what some people would have us think.

  16. karmanot says:

    LOL!

  17. karmanot says:

I can only speak for myself and you are damn right, I am very prejudiced when it comes to pedophiles and consider you a criminal in waiting.

  18. karmanot says:

Don’t worry father, the Bishop will cover for you.

  19. Naja pallida says:

    I feel so special.

  20. karmanot says:

“I am part of a different pedophile group” Did you catch this FBI?

  21. karmanot says:

Oh Naja, you must have hit a nerve with two NAMBLA down arrows! Congratulations. Most of us only get one. :-)

  22. Max says:

Oh cool. Instead of disputing what I say, people would rather just downvote. All that tells me is that you disagree, but have nothing constructive to say. In other words — you are prejudiced.

  23. Max says:

Huh, my comment was deleted. Was this due to downvotes, or moderation? I made a post calling out the discrimination in this blog post — discrimination likely due to ignorance. I then received some comments that mocked me, and was ultimately deleted. If I was deleted by the moderator, I’d like to know why. (I can reprint the comment if necessary.)

I am a pedophile. I have never abused a child, and I never will. I have many friends like me.

All I ask of you is to stop using the word “pedophile” as a synonym for “child abuser.” Pedophilia is a sexual orientation. It does NOT effect a persons morals. When “progressive” people make judgements about pedophiles based solely on their sexual orientation, they are doing the same thing that conservatives do about homosexuals. You can’t honestly claim to be completely against sexual discrimination when you paint pedophiles, as a class, with a broad brush of hate.

  24. Max says:

    Uh, no.

“Pedophilia” is the attraction to children. CSA (child sexual abuse) is the abuse you speak of. And as for recovery, I think it is wrong to make such a general statement. I know survivors of various forms of child abuse, including sexual abuse. Their ability to cope varies from person to person, and doesn’t appear to be dependent on the type of abuse. CSA is a horrible thing, regardless, and that’s why I fight this wrongful conflation.

  25. condew says:

I’d say the Boy Scouts really know when to release an announcement. This decision will make them despised by gay and strait alike, but the Boston marathon bombing has sucked in just about every journalist; a shiny object none could resist. So almost no-one will hear about this baby the Boy Scouts cut in half.

  26. Max says:

    Registered? I don’t understand…. Yes, I’m registered to vote.

  27. Max says:

I am not affiliated with NAMBLA. I am not familiar with their exact stance on various issues, but I don’t think their philosophy is in line with mine. (Also, my attraction is to girls, not boys.) I am part of a different pedophile group, virped.org, but this is not official outreach on their behalf (I leave that to the group’s founders) — I am speaking on my own as an individual.

  28. d3clark says:

This will send a message to gay kids that they’re “kinda, sorta OK” to
join as kids, but they’ll be unwelcome later because of what they’ll
grow into – gay adult males.

Or, perhaps, the BSA is offering its own reparative therapy. Get gay
boys into the scouts and have them taught by straight men and maybe
they’ll convert. And, conversely, those gay scout leaders will, by
example, make their cub scouts gay (just like African-American and Asian
troop leaders make their cub scouts Black and Yellow).

Of course, closeted gay and lesbian troop leaders are OK. And closeted scout candidates aren’t a problem, either.

And remember, the BSA doesn’t necessarily reject convicted felons as troop leaders. So gay and lesbian adults are < convicted felons

And, note the wording of the BSA proposal: "no youth may be denied
membership in the Scouts on the basis of sexual orientation or
preference alone." But I'll bet that a potential scout who reveals
himself to be gay would still get denied for other reasons. "We're not
denying his admission because he's gay, but he is gay and has a single
    gay father."

These are just h8ters trying to attempt to be more politically correct h8ters. No change in their underlying beliefs.

  29. Sallynotadude says:

Look at that! A story that can make full use of your hyperbolic crap, they deserve it too. The freaking gall of those people to put this crap out there AFTER postponing their original vote. I hope that this solidifies the death of the BSA, we need to make a better scouts program now.

  30. BeccaM says:

Judging from the down-vote you collected, my dear friend Naja, it seems that NAMBLA has at least one fan on this blog.

  31. Mike_in_Houston says:

    Thanks, fentwin. You got it…

  32. karmanot says:

The rationalizing of pedophilia to which you responded, simply boggles the mind and coming from a ‘sweetie’ at that. “However technically it is possible” to call it extremely insensitive BS!

  33. karmanot says:

“it is always child abuse.” Exactly

  34. Stephen Clark says:

    LOL. Yes.

But, seriously, even for being gay + joining a gay-straight alliance at school, or even being gay + talking about being gay.

  35. karmanot says:

    Indeed.

  36. karmanot says:

“Many pedophiles do not abuse children” I observe that thou doth protest too much. Are you registered?

  37. karmanot says:

I think it means little Bruno can’t join the church troop if he insists on a pink Barbie sash.

  38. karmanot says:

No one fools corporate donors. Many of these corps are rabidly homophobic.

  39. karmanot says:

    LIKE!

  40. karmanot says:

Oh yeah, there’s nothing like taking slow little steps toward justice that don’t offend common sensibilities. F*ck that. Just ask Gandhi or Martin Luther King!

  41. nicho says:

Pedophilia is one form of child abuse. There are others, but it is definitely one. People can actually overcome such things as being physically or emotionally abused. But recovering from sexual abuse is more difficult and often scars a person deeply for life.

  42. karmanot says:

Maybe it’s a secret Catholic organization.

  43. nicho says:

Well, that’s it. See if I buy any more of their cookies.

  44. karmanot says:

I wonder if any of the white girl bigots dare to show up in a classic ‘little black dress’?

  45. karmanot says:

“they will expel one who is gay *plus*”— like tying their best Eagle buddy up in complicated bondage knots and playing?

  46. BeccaM says:

‘Possible’, perhaps which is why I qualified my statement with that first word. Likely or probable? I think not.

    Let’s not split hairs here.

  47. Hue-Man says:

This half-baked egg isn’t even hatched! “The Scouts announced Friday that the proposal would be submitted to the
roughly 1,400 voting members of its National Council at a meeting in
Texas the week of May 20.” A. Expect every one of the 1,400 to be lobbied by the fundy funders to vote NO. B. The anti-gay hate groups will be protesting at the meeting in TEXAS. On present form, expect them to be violent as they intimidate the voters. C. Expect the approval percentage to be 80% for the motion to be adopted!

If it fails, the executives’ whining can be heard already: “We were trying to be progressive but our Council isn’t ready for this kind of (abominable, sinful) change. Come back next century. And don’t forget – the KIDS.”

  48. Stephen Clark says:

Yes, here’s how it would work under the “alone” policy.

Church-sponsored troop expels gay teen. Gay teen complains to Scouts that the troop discriminated based on sexual orientation. Church-sponsored troop says it was not because he is gay but because he was seen on a date with another boy. Gay teen says that is sexual orientation discrimination because the troop does not expel straight teens who go on dates with young girls. Scouts says it the expulsion is fine because it was not discrimination based on sexual orientation “alone,” but was discrimination based on sexual orientation (gay) plus conduct (going on a date). In other words, the Scouts language allows discrimination for dating while gay, or doing anything while gay.

  49. Sweetie says:

I would say equally, not more so. It really can’t be more offensive to deem gay kids/adults “unclean” versus deeming them pedophiles or pedophiles in training. Both are pretty much equivalent in their badness.

  50. Sweetie says:

Having a simultaneous ban on gay adults is bad enough to make this policy nothing more than contemptible to anyone possessing even a basic grasp of logic.

  51. Sweetie says:

Well, the Supreme Court did rule that it’s legal to own and create virtual child porn. The ruling stated that such material does not harm actual children. So it is possible that some pedophiles limit themselves to virtual material. Some people who have strong sex drives successfully choose to live a live of celibacy. Most fail. However, technically, it is possible for a pedophile to not harm children, if her/his willpower is strong enough. Psychology considers it to be a mental disorder, because of the nature of the attraction. I don’t know if there is a correlation with willpower or not. If pedophilia comes with impaired willpower then you would be correct.

  52. BeccaM says:

    In all likelihood you’re right.

I’m also reminded of that high school in Georgia, the one that has a racially segregated prom. There’s no specific law or rule saying the prom has to be that way — they just set it up such that only white kids get invited to the ‘private party’ that everybody in that district refers to as the prom.

Whatever the official policy, I have little doubt that the BSA groups will find ways to keep on expelling gay kids. They’ll just say it wasn’t because the kid was gay, but because he “chose a gay lifestyle” or some BS like that.

  53. Sweetie says:

    hahahahaha

  54. Stephen Clark says:

No, this is not a positive thing if it is just a ruse that allows troops to continue expelling gay youths if they do anything gay, like go on a date or have a boyfriend. The language suspiciously says they won’t discriminate on sexual orientation “alone.” That word is reserving the right to discriminate based on being gay plus engaging in any kind of gay conduct. They will claim to be inclusive, try to fool corporate donors into continuing their giving, but then keep drumming out gay teens who don’t abstain from normal teenage dating and such. Worse than the current policy because it’s not much better for the gay teens but is far more manipulative.

  55. BeccaM says:

Virtually every pedophile acts or has acted on their urges in some fashion, even if it is limited to porno. Which itself is child abuse. There are no exceptions — it is always child abuse.

I’m trying to decide whether you are a troll, appallingly ignorant, or a card-carrying member of NAMBLA (as Naja Pallida suggests). In any case, you probably just won prize for the “Most Offensive Comment on AmericaBlog Today”.

  56. Stephen Clark says:

John, be careful not to overlook that weasel word “alone.” The problem isn’t just that the language excludes adults. Nondiscrimination language with qualifiers like “alone” or “solely” (an old segregationist trick) guts the nondiscrimination language by allowing discrimination based on the trait by simply combining it with another factor. Here, I suspect that the Scouts are trying to say that they won’t expel a teen who is gay but they will expel one who is gay *plus* engages in any kind of gay conduct, like going on a date, holding hands, kissing, having a boyfriend, etc. That would allow bigoted religious groups to accept the ban because they could roll out their “love the sinner, hate the sin” nonsense. But it would also let the Scouts falsely portray themselves as having ended the discrimination against gay youths.

  57. BlueIdaho says:

As long as the BSA allows the crazed fundie religious nuts to sponsor troops in their churches, nothing will change. How many gay youths do you think will feel welcomed in that environment? This is just a word ploy to get the activists to STFU.

  58. Naja pallida says:

I didn’t realize NAMBLA’s outreach program was still in operation.

  59. Naja pallida says:

“Alone” just means they’ll tack on other excuses, like one gay scout was being a disruption among the other scouts of the troop, so he had to go.

  60. Bose says:

The tepid language they used is worth noting: “no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.”

Alone? Alone? As in, a scout who is gay will have a separate code of conduct to fulfill?

So, the door is still open to: You’re not being banned because you’re gay, kid, it’s that you can’t be gay in this church-sponsored troop. Or, it’s not that you’re gay, it’s that you’re gay and you broke the new rule about segregated gay/straight bathrooms and one-man tents.

It’s possible that the BSA will take a step in a better direction, but impossible to tell yet what step is being considered.

  61. gaylib says:

This is even more offensive than the current policy,

  62. Max says:

Please stop conflating pedophilia with child abuse. You are opposed to
the BSAs ignorance and discrimination based on sexual orientation, but
you ironically turn around and do the EXACT SAME THING.

    Many
pedophiles do not abuse children. (And many child abusers are not
pedophiles.) Conflating pedophilia with child abuse is just as wrong and
hurtful as conflating homosexuality with child abuse.

  63. fentwin says:

i.e. Their ability to mold young minds must not be all that much if they think these kids have no alternative but to grow up to become pedophiles. (I think thats the gist :)

  64. UncleBucky says:

    Huh?

  65. UncleBucky says:

No, this is not a positive thing. They are trying to get away with their anti-LGBT agenda. Just as that teacher was fired for being “outed” in the obit of her mother, this crap has to stop. And that means going DIRECTLY against the LDS, RCC, and any thumper cults that are driving this bigotry.

Now, if your hands are clean of this, various scout leaders and so on, don’t worry. We can spot innocence. If you are being forced to accede to this nonsense to keep a job, a position or a scout in the BSA, you need to speak out en masse, so the LDSers/RCCers/Thumpers can’t beat you up.

This crrrap will stop. ;o) So long as we work together against those who are pushing this anti-LGBT agenda.

  66. UncleBucky says:

    Hmph. How “Mormon/RCC/Thumper” of them….!!

Were my kid a part of BSA, I would quickly get all his stuff, all his awards, and so on and join other scouts to at least make a temporary parallel organization until the BSA gives up this silly campaign.

  67. Mike_in_Houston says:

If the gay boys all become pedophiles when they are adults, that doesn’t say a hell of a lot for the BSA’s “molding,” now, does it?

  68. No, this isn’t a positive thing. It won’t help the Scouts. They will still be discriminating. Imagine ending segregation only for those under 18.

  69. Tee Jay says:

Look at it this way – change comes a step at a time. This is a positive thing. Expecting a 180 degree reversal is expecting too much. The BSA is unbelievably resistant to change and full of people who think it’s their duty to carry on the tradition, however misguided that tradition is. So, if they pass this resolution, they are taking a step in the right direction. They will stop discriminating against youth, and the foothold of change will have made its way through the front door. Then, after this change settles in, the issue of discrimination against adult homosexuals should have better traction.
