Wonderful speech by French Minister of Justice following historic gay marriage vote

A wonderful speech by the French Minister of Justice, Christiane Taubira, before the French National Assembly, immediately following yesterday’s final passage of legislation legalizing gay marriages in France.

French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira

French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira

Apparently, Taubira has been the force behind pushing marriage equality through parliament.

Here’s the close of her speech, addressed to France’s gay and lesbian youth, who had to witness such hatred from the religious right, the Catholic church, and France’s opposition conservative party throughout the debate on the gay marriage bill.   The quote below is via a wonderful translation done by Joseph McShea. You can read the rest of the speech here, and find the video of it below.

Tonight, we would especially like to speak to the adolescents in our country – boys and girls – who have been hurt during this debate. We speak to those children who found themselves in the midst of deep and frightening chaos. They discovered a society where a wave of selfishness led many to loudly protest against the rights of others.

We simply want to tell these adolescents that they are at home in our society.

We recognize them in this society. We recognize their contradictions, talents, shortcomings, qualities and fragility. These are the things that make each and every one of us unique. Regardless of any sexual issues, each one of us is unique. That is the strength of our society. It is even the basis of our society. It is the basis of our relationship to society. So we tell these adolescents: if you find yourself losing hope, sweep all of those thoughts out of your minds. They are only words. One day they will float away. Stay with us and keep your heads high. You have nothing to be ashamed of. We say that loud and clear, with our all the strength in our voices. As Nietzsche said: Truth kills. And if you repress it, it will kill you.

Thank you all.

No, thank you.

    Discrimination is immoral.

It fuels hate, and it creates a foundation upon which the temples of conflict and social dysfunction are built.

This speech marks the liberation of many from the prison of that tyranny.

  6. Neil Cameron says:

I agree. I will not have my rights trampled on to protect the perceived rights potential, non existent human beings

A tyrannical ploy being imposed on our society?
Many LGBTI people grew up in the world of the tyrannical ploy that your lot constructed.
The tyrannical ploy is now dead. If you want it back, get yourself a time machine.
Until you find one, wish ALL of humanity happiness, love and joy and get on with your little life.

“Same-sex marriage makes an implicit statement that mothers and fathers are interchangeable, and that sex is irrelevant to parenting.”

No. Marriage equality makes an implicit statement that regardless of a person’s sexual orientation, two adults can make a legal kinship with each other.

“Same-sex marriage PURPOSELY separates a child from at least one biological parent.”

So does divorce, and giving your children up for adoption. But I don’t see people like you demanding bans on those things… because that would negatively impact straight people’s lives, and we can’t have that can we?

You also seem to be under the false impression that procreation is a requirement to getting married. It’s NOT, and hasn’t ever been. So I find it enlightening that suddenly hypothetical children are being used to discriminate against gay people, when those same children aren’t being used to prevent straight infertile couples, or the elderly, or those not wanting children, from getting married. Your position is based on a lie. But I suppose if you repeat it enough times, even you’ll start to believe it. No doubt you are aware of married straight couples that have chosen not to have children. So why aren’t you demanding that they get divorced… if marriage is solely about the needs of children?

For the record, the 20% of gay couples that do adopt children, are only able to do so because straight couples DISPOSE of them. Those children don’t have ANY parents, let alone a mother or father. So, NO, obviously children do not have a right to be raised by their biological mother and father. Otherwise giving your children up for adoption would be illegal. So stop blaming gay people for the “sins” of straight people. No one is buying it.

Taubira is a remarkable, admirable woman. Last night I saw her on French television riding her bike in Parisian traffic as she does everyday and conducting a humorous interview in motion with a reporter.
At one point, she was asked how she felt about marriage in general…she laughingly replied. “I’m not the person to ask, I’ve been divorced twice!”
She came from a poor family in Guyana, which is a French Departement, managed to get scholarships, became a professor of economics and agriculture. She formed a political party…became the Guyanese representative in the French government. She actually ran for president of France in the 1990’s. Meanwhile she was a single mother raising 2 daughters. Now? perhaps one of the most powerful women in France, she is the Minister of Justice. Incredible intellect with a quick sense of humor. In the events leading up to the passage of the law, the Christian Democrat Party led by Christine Boutin distributed posters which were racially inflammatory against Taubira. That went no where fast….Where as the opposition is selfish and small, she is selfless with a grand heart. Every time I hear her speak, I admire her more.

  14. FLL says:

Are you going out of your way to use circular reasoning, or does it just come naturally to you?

  15. Same-sex marriage is an injustice, a tyrannical ploy being perpetrated upon our society, the pernicious consequences of which are simply mocked and laughed at by its supporters. Ignorance and prejudice have taken the place of knowledge and reason. Caprice and passion substituted for prudence and virtue. The happiness of society, the good of all families, and the welfare of mankind fall victim to the injustice of selfish adult love, which calculates every thing for itself, while taking no notice of a child’s best interest or the public advantage of a government promoting ONLY the traditional family unit.

Same-sex marriage is antithetical to the Rule of Law, for the principle object of laws in general is to correct bad inclinations, to prevent vicious habits, to hinder their effects, and to eradicate the passions; or at least to contain them within proper limits. Same-sex marriage makes an implicit statement that mothers and fathers are interchangeable, and that sex is irrelevant to parenting. Once same-sex marriage becomes legally and socially acceptable, more women will decide to raise children together. Teen aged boys without fathers are at risk for juvenile delinquency, violence, criminal activity, gang membership, and incarceration. Teen aged girls without fathers are at risk for early sexual activity, multiple sex partners, out of wedlock pregnancies, and sexually transmitted disease.

Same-sex marriage is perfectly contrary to the principle of marriage, having more resemblance to divorce and adultery, same-sex marriage purposely separates a child from at least one biological parent, thereby creating broken homes, not as a matter of extraordinary circumstances, but as routine. Same-sex marriage proponents callously ignore a child’s Natural Right to know, and be raised by, both biological parents, and make the most preposterous and pretentious claim that marriage was instituted by civil society primarily for the benefit of any two loving adults. Take away Natural Laws, and that moral tie which supports justice and honesty in a whole nation and establishes also particular duties in families, or in other relations of life; and man becomes the most savage and ferocious of all animals, licentiousness becomes the consequence of independence.

After what has been said, let us be satisfied with observing, that the fitness in favor of the sanction of traditional marriage, is so much stronger and more pressing, as same-sex marriage throws into the system of humanity an obscurity and confusion, which borders on very much upon the absurd, if it does not come quite close up to it. There is, certainly, no comparison between traditional marriage and same-sex marriage, in respect to beauty and fitness; the first is a work of the most perfect reason; the second is defective, and provides no manner of remedy against a great many disorders. Now even this alone points out sufficiently on which side the truth lies, and to reject this truth leads us insensibly to a kind of pyrrhonism, which would also be a subversion of the Rule of Law and social order.

Here are two truths regarding marriage: (1) A man creating a family with another man is not equal to creating a family with a woman, and (2) denying children parents of both genders at home is an objective evil. Kids need and yearn for both.

Same-sex marriage PURPOSELY separates a child from at least one biological parent. Non-biological parents lack the advantage of consanguineous insight leaving them all too often ill-prepared to protect the child from unfamiliar hazards. Left unrecognized and unattended, vicious habits, and irregular passions, obfuscate the mind; and neglect, levity, and prejudices of the ill-equipped non-biological parents precipitate a child into the grossest of errors, rendering the child’s conduct a burden to the happiness of both society and the life of the child.

Same-sex marriage disregards the natural order of procreatory responsibility, not only confusing the natural disposition of parental authority; but undermining the legal principle that children have a right to a relationship with their biological parents, depriving a child access to their biological parent’s genetic, cultural and social heritage, not for extraordinary circumstances, but as a matter of routine. Same-sex marriage amounts to institutionalized adultery through a hostile takeover of civil society by the State. Children will no longer be entitled to their biological parents, as the transitory wants of same-sex adults will have taken precedence over a child’s best interest.

Children are not pets one purchases from rescue shelters(adoption clinics) and puppy mills(insemination and surrogacy). Children are human beings endowed with a natural desire to be procreated from an engendered act of love between a husband and a wife. Same-sex marriage is adulterous by nature and thereby destructive to not only children, but to civilization.

Same-sex marriage couples selfishly demand “Marriage Equality”, yet, in return, they offer LESS-THAN-EQUAL protection of the child’s happiness than can be afforded through the presence of both biological parents. In the name of “Marriage Equality”, same-sex marriage leaves the child fully aware that his family is, in all truth, not at all “equal”, natural, nor complete. The use of the term “marriage Equality” by same-sex marriage proponents selfishly ignores the child’s perspective of “equality”.

Same-sex marriage proponents profess that it is love which gives the right to join the institution of marriage, yet, in doing so, they selfishly violate the principle LOVING objective of this noble institution; to protect a child’s Natural Right to be raised by both biological parents.

In fine, same-sex marriage surmounts to nothing more than an unnatural extravagance which the supporters most ignorantly claim to be a “right”.

“No one has a right to do that which, if everybody did it, would destroy society.” —Immanuel Kant

  16. FLL says:

In one line of Taubira’s speech, she made reference to legislators who opposed marriage equality and argued against it during parliamentary debate:

“…their objections will also be recorded by history.”

That observation is not only true of legislators who may have felt pressured to vote against equality because they represented conservative, rural districts. Taubira’s observation is also true of people in any country who oppose equality out of sheer hate. Are bigots so foolish that they don’t understand that their neighbors and fellow citizens will remember their hate? Making enemies right and left is no way to go through life.

  17. Steve_in_CNJ says:

She actually said “une sublimation des egoismes”, which is also Nietszche. Sublimation refers to the denial of one’s own selfish instincts in the course of moralizing against those of others.

  20. BeccaM says:

    I loved that line:

…a wave of selfishness led many to loudly protest against the rights of others.

Because that’s exactly what it is.

Banning civil marriage equality won’t stop gays and lesbians from getting married anyway. We’ve been exchanging vows ever since it became (reasonably) safe to come out of the closet — and according to a number of stories, such as with great souls such as Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, even long before that. We’re already marrying each other and creating families.

Neither will it stop us from raising our children, for those of us who have them. The only thing a ban does is deny our children the same legal rights and protections as those in heterosexual-headed families. And it stops us from giving good homes through fostering and adoption to those who don’t just lack a ‘mother and a father’ — but actually have nobody right now.

To want to deny simple fundamental civil rights to someone because you don’t approve of them is selfish, and hateful. “We have these rights, but you can’t because we don’t want you to.” Selfish and hateful especially since it should be self-evident that withholding these rights isn’t going to result in any more heterosexual marriages nor in more children being raised by hetero two-parent households — as if either of those is somehow superior to all other conditions, which is debatable.

I think we all know the real desire of these anti-gay bigots: To make being gay illegal again. For the state to be able to come in and take away children being raised in gay and lesbian families. To forcibly break up any asserted marriage or same-sex cohabitation that is anything other than purely platonic.

And of course to drive youngsters who are realizing they’re gay into suicide.
