NFL player Asante Samuel wishes Jason Collins wouldn’t “flaunt” his sexuality

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel is very unhappy that Washington Wizard Jason Collins came out this week as a gay man.

UPDATE: We’re not very happy that Asante Samuel has been busy flaunting his heterosexuality either.  Think of the kids, Asante.

Samuel says he doesn’t understand why all these gay men in professional sports are constantly standing up and announcing that they’re gay. Straight people don’t do it, Samuel said:

“Straight people are not announcing they’re straight, so why does everybody have to announce their sexuality or whatever? You know, what they prefer…So that’s just how I see it. That’s my opinion on things. All respect you know, I have nothing but respect for the people whoever decisions they make and whatever, but you know, you don’t have to show it and flaunt it like that. You know what I’m saying, we have kids out here, too.”

Yeah, it’s been a virtual inundation of out-gay men in professional sports lately.  First there was Jason Collins.  Then there was…  oh that’s right, Jason Collins is the first gay man to come out in any of the major professional sports leagues.  But even one is too many when you’re a bigot.

I have to hand it to Jason Collins, he’s shown why it’s so difficult for men to come out in professional sports.  The field is littered with bigots.  There was ESPN sportcaster Chris Broussard who thinks Jason Collins should stop calling himsef a Christian now that he’s gay (because that is why we turn to ESPN sportscasters, for definitive judgments on one’s Christianity).

Then there was the Miami Dolphin’s Mike Wallace who didn’t understand why gay men would ignore all those beautiful women out there.

TMZ reports that Collins also received Twitter death threats following his coming out:

— “Yous a dead f****t talkn on tv Boy.”
— “Listening to Jason Collins describe his gayness as ‘beautiful’ makes me wanna puke. And kill him.”
— “Jason collins comes out the closet! Kill that biiitttchhhh!!!”
— “First jason collins say he gay.. Now he on espn w lipgloss on  kill him now !!!”
— “Jason Collins should get the death penalty lol how u a 7 foot gay dude lol the west is crazy smh”

That’s why gay people announce publicly that they’re gay, Asante Samuel.  Because of the hate.  And if you really cared about the children, you’d care about the gay kid who’s contemplating suicide because of listening to the hatred of so many sports fans who agree with you.

And last time I checked, no straight kid every tried to kill himself because a gay guy came out.

Bonus clip – Jon Stewart on Jason Collins’ coming out:

“All in all it’s a pretty great day for major league sports. At long last, they’ve decided that gay people are fit to be included in their elite club — one that’s already allowed in adulterers, wife-swappers, gamblers, cheaters, rapists, racists and slaughterers of man. Those who’ve abused spouses, drugs, alcohol, family members and animals.”

So, straight NFL players with their trophy-trash of the day on their arms, covered in bling, are not flaunting their sexuality? If asked whether or not they are straight, would they hem and haw and lie about it? No, they just expect the gay players to do so. F*ck ’em.

It can’t be said often enough! :-)

  5. PDQ says:

Hehehe….I figured you’d like that link John!! There may be more pics of him and the wife throwing their heterosexuality in people’s faces but I didn’t have the time to look.

  6. Bill_Perdue says:

Is that happening here or on another site. I don’t remember seeing it.

  7. fritzrth says:

Sorry. I completely misread your post and, thinking I’d cleverly add to it, ended up just repeating it.

  8. Ted Hayes says:

Screw him and the horse he rode in on.

  9. mucholderguy says:

If straight guys couldn’t make jokes about homosexuals they wouldn’t have much to talk about.

  10. karmanot says:

    Yep, that’s what I meant. :-)

  11. citizen_spot says:

Thanks. I’m going to need brain bleach to get that visual out of my head. ; )

  12. MyrddinWilt says:

Are you saying they deserve to be hit on the head more or less?

  13. nicho says:

Unfortunately, football is the national religion of the US. These cretins get much more attention than they deserve.

  14. nicho says:

I’ll bet they’re buying plenty of those.

  15. pappyvet says:

Sheesh, how many times have I heard a white bigot say he wished blacks wouldn’t flaunt their “ghetto walk” or the way they dress,or a hundred other complaints that all basically say the same thing.

  16. Papa Bear says:

They might be willing to settle for a reach-around…

  17. fritzrth says:

Them’s that can’t? Talk like they do. B-)

  18. MyrddinWilt says:

    Who is this guy anyway?

I wouldn’t take too much notice of folk whose job description amounts to being hit on the head, hard and repeatedly.

It would have been ok if he had said that it is a pity that anyone has to take any notice. Nobody takes any notice of sportswomen being lesbians which is how it should be. The problem in the NFL was that the bigots had to make an issue of it and say that there was no place in the sport for a gay player.

It doesn’t sound like he is a hater so much as pig ignorant. But pig ignorant is what gives rise to 90% of the bigotry.

Maybe someone should go and have a talk with him. Not that that is likely to be much help, his job description is still ‘being hit on the head’.

  19. ckg1 says:

Or the longer version…”Know your role and SHUT YOUR MOUTH!”

Mr. Samuel, why does it concern you so about Collins’ coming out? I didn’t know announcing that you are gay is “flaunting” it.

  20. bill says:

Maybe straight people, especially athletes, should leave their eye candy home and refuse to have their pictures taken with their main squeeze all the time. That is flaunting.

  21. karmanot says:

    ‘Bugs’ me too.

  22. karmanot says:

“are in for a big and exceedingly unpleasant surprise.” Yep, moron trolls with

    names like Collins.

  23. karmanot says:

    Them’s that can do, talk.

  24. karmanot says:

Maybe his lack of noodle is the cause.

  25. karmanot says:

I’m still waiting for Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell to have a stroke.

  26. karmanot says:

“Imagine how difficult it would be for you to hide the fact your straight?” Collin’s personal grooming alone indicates he is straight and militant.

  27. karmanot says:

And a bigot with dread lock worms sprouting out of his head is so attractive.

  28. BeccaM says:

Bigot is as bigot does, is all I have to say.

  29. Papa Bear says:

many of them would like a stroke…

  31. Stev84 says:

In fact that guy has repeatedly flaunted his wife, children and family.

  32. UncleBucky says:

With his lovely WIFE…. And that’s not flaunting? Happiness for them, but in the meantime, Mr. Asante Samuel, shut your cake hole!

  33. UncleBucky says:

Message to Asante Samuel: Don’t flaunt YOUR sexuality. Then that makes it easy.

  34. nicho says:

Straight people don’t announce that they’re straight because people already assume they are. And they see nothing wrong with that. But if you assume that a straight man is gay, many of them would have a stroke.

  35. PolishBear says:

    Why does it matter?

Straight people have never had to worry about being fired from their jobs, kicked out of their rental properties, or turned away from businesses, because of their sexual orientation. Gay people shouldn’t have to worry about it, either. THAT’S why it matters.

As long as the relationship is not incestuous or violates age of consent laws, Straight people have never been denied the right to marry the person they love. Gay people should have to worry about it, either. THAT’S why it matters.

A Straight couple goes walking along a downtown sidewalk holding hands, and no one gives it a second thought. A Gay couple does the same thing, and it’s perceived as a militant, subversive act. THAT’S why it matters.

A Straight employee puts a framed photo of his wife on his desk, and no one cares. A Gay employee does the same, and he’s accused of being “in your face.” THAT’S why it matters.

Asante Samuel needs to get a clue.

  36. fritzrth says:

Not to mention the straight sex talk that goes on constantly in highschool and college locker rooms, and in straight bars across the country.

  37. PeteWa says:

“dear gays, please use the servant’s doors and use your own drinking fountains. and also, don’t announce your presence, or whatever.”
    ~ Asante Samuel

  38. optimista10 says:

What a silly comment – what a sad attempt at sheilding homophobia. Straight people do not “announce” they are straight because they can openly display their relationship, affection and be proud of who they date and if or when they get married. Homosexuals cannot even get married in the United States – let alone hold hands? Oh the outcry! Collins is a role model to many, I am sure and him “coming out of the closet” encourages others to be proud of who they are and embrace it! Imagine how difficult it would be for you to hide the fact your straight? So not be open about who you really are throughout your life and career. I can’t imagine not telling my parents or friends about my boyfriend…

  39. Russell Lewis says:

So, this jackass supports a cause for single women who have offended Christian values by going out and getting pregnant, by championing a shelter and cause for them but being gay he finds offensive. This prick sure has his values system out of whack.

  40. rerutled says:

I’ll say what everyone else is thinking about that picture, since no one else has the courage…

Pasta Bolognese is disgusting. Seriously, if you’re gonna eat ground beef in a tomato sauce, do the work and make a lasagne.

  41. Omg that rocks

  42. PDQ says:

Yes indeed. Why announce your sexuality in a magazine?

  43. fentwin says:

“Straight people are not announcing they’re straight…”

    Lets count the ways this is statement is wrong;

    wedding bands = public announcement

family pictures at the office = public announcement

talking about your weekend date = public announcement

talking about your kids = public announcement

Walking hand in hand with your wife/girlfriend = public announcement

Thats all I can think of right now, but that seems sufficient to get the point across; Mr. Samuel’s privileged position in society leaves him blind to his privileged status.

  44. Houndentenor says:

It is kind of funny that he thinks his anti-gay bigotry isn’t transparent. It’s like he’s FLAUNTING it! LOL

  45. Bill_Perdue says:

The closet door (except for the political closet) is wide open. Young women and men are flooding out into the sunlight and accepting their genetic heritage.

Bigots who try to push us back into the closet are in for a big and exceedingly unpleasant surprise.

  46. Sorry saw your comment after. Feel the same way!

  47. lynchie says:

Yeah the bring your kid to work thing is a little much. Where I work if you don’t have a hetero spouse or if you aren’t married you can’t bring your significant other. Really puts the spotlight on you when you are there as a single.

  48. Claessens1 says:

Yes. And I wish my co-workers would remove pictures of their spouses and children from their desks and stop coming to office parties with those spouses at their sides.

  49. Well I’m not a fan of his hairstyle – I wish he didn’t flaunt that!

    I have nothing but respoect…” “…. or whatever….”
    “You know what I’m saying….” “… or whatever…”
Wow, what strength in presentation of what you believe in…. or whatever……football-hero-dude.
    And the best…
“We have kids out here too,… and I’m their father figure….” “…or whatever…” –or not!
    “Know what I’m saying,…” NO! I DON’T!

  52. nicho says:

Samuel could set an example by not flaunting his race. He should try to act more white. He could start by getting a normal haircut.
