Wendy’s hilarious 1985 Soviet TV commercial (video)

I think I’d posted this before, but with Russia all the news of late, and all of it bad news, as Vladimir Putin brings Russia back to the 1980s, or worse 1880s, it seemed time.

This is the iconic Wendy’s commercial from 1985.

You have to remember that 1985 was the height of the Cold War Reagan era. We were not friends with Russia, to put it nicely. And things in Russia weren’t going terribly well. The economy was backwards. TVs, for example, had a tendency to explode.  And people would give an arm and a leg to get their hands on Levi’s jeans, or Marlboro cigarettes – they just didn’t have those kind of “luxuries” available.

Actually, it’s funny re-watching this commercial now, almost 30 years later. I finally got the joke about “evening wear.” She’s carrying a flashlight because they had no electricity!

It was a vicious, and rather hysterical, commercial. A definite period piece.

  1. The way she’s holding it like a bouquet, or a queen’s scepter.

Now you….don’t make me giggle at this…I was trying so hard to be serious. The USA sweater would improve the look!

  4. karmanot says:

True S_W, but just think how chic black-marketed copied of the USA sweaters will accessorize burlap sacks, feed bags and twine belts.

I like the idea that history is a matter of taste—-well done sir, well done.

One of my favorite commercials of all time.

Kind of reminds me of how sad I was when it first aired…that we could make fun of people who were suffering because their political system was oppressing them. Still makes me sad….wonder if we will still be giggling at others 100 years from now.

Don’t even have to watch it. Remember it from when it aired on TV. Svwim vere. Evening vere… Like it was yesterday. Love it.

  16. Was weird when I counted in my head that it was 30 years ago. Yikes.

Thanks for taking me back to those carefree days of my–youth… like elementary school.
    Totally K-6.
Not like undergraduate years or something at all. Nope.
The 80s. Those were like 10 years ago, right? Crap…
