Putin has racist, who depicted Obamas as monkey with banana, light Olympic flame

My god what an awful country.  Russian President Vladimir Putin today selected a woman, who previously depicted President Obama and his wife Michelle monkeys ogling a banana, to light the Olympic flame during the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics, being held in Sochi, Russia.

Russia has a long history of virulent, and violent, racism against blacks, and those they consider black (basically anyone who isn’t blond).  And it would seem odd in a civilized country that one would choose to broadcast one’s hatred of black people to the world during an event that is supposedly about world peace and harmony, but this is Russia.

Russian former figure skater Irina Rodnina lit the flame today.  She also posted this on Twitter a few months ago:

rodnina_tvit_obama

It’s truly amazing how poorly Russia is coming off during these Olympics, what with the ongoing toilet disasters, the overall shoddy condition of the Olympic hotels, and yesterday’s news that the Russians have installed spy-cams in the showers of Olympic hotel guests.

Not only has the world learned how much Russians hate gay and trans people – and we already knew they hate Jews, and basic democratic freedoms – but now we’re learning that Russia a supremely racist country as well.

Russia is so racist that the country’s president thought it funny to use a racist to tweak the President of the United States during the key moment of the Olympics.

What a shameful Olympics this has turned into.

#CheersToSochi

Russian vigilante groups have organized around the country to kidnap young gay people and terrorize them, including this young South African who was held captive and had a watermelon shoved in his face.

And if the Russians put a bottle of rubbing alcohol in a leprechauns hand that would be dumb and preposterous

Putin learned racism from America just like that Russian who killed Bill Cosby’s some just like Mrs. Ocsby said in that huge letter to the editor that all the big USA papers printed on the 2nd page. And she’s a PhD just like Bill. American is so bad IRA unbelievable but it really is.

    What’s your point, grandpa?
No President in U.S. history has overseen greater financial demise, war failure, or financial shift from the bottom and middle classes to the top.

What about a country who gives citizenship to a shorttracker just to win some metals.let alone the trader that does it. I thought the olympics were all about representing your own country. To go to another country after successfully winning multiple golds in your own just seems like nothing more than greed to me. I think ive watched my last olympic games after many years.

  16. venik4 says:

Are you saying Obama doesn’t like bananas?

  17. Annette Schaeffer says:

I’m in Russia volunteering to teach them how to be green, a surprisingly popular theme here. What’s surprising about Russians is their odd combination of complete lack of racism with naivete about how Americans think about race. They’re often shocked when they encounter the hyper-racial focus of Americans, for example, when businesses are asked to provide the racial makeup of their personnel in government bidding and so on. Russians have no race issue internally because they are an ethnic monoculture. I live in the fourth largest city in Russia and I can go months without seeing a black person anywhere. So they have no experience of African Americans in person at all. But they do have a legacy Soviet propaganda thing of supporting their brothers in Africa against the Western colonialists, so what few blacks one sees in Russia are usually African, not American, and there’s not the slightest hesitation about the local girls dating black men. I seriously believe that most Russians would look at the photo of Obama with a banana not thinking it is a racial insult against blacks but an insult against Obama’s intelligence. Many Russians think Obama is an incompetent imbecile based on what they see as his extremely ineffective administration. They think he’s a fool for giving up American gains overseas and that it is a foolish error for him to make America more socialist. After 70 years of communism the Russians have zero appetite for socialism.

By the way, if you think Russians are really against gays you have no idea of the deep reverence that Russians have for Tchaikovsky and ballet and numerous other gifts that every sentient person in Russia knows are the gifts of gay men, including artists, dancers, composers, scientists, poets and writers. They revere those gay men as heroes. They just don’t think that a personal matter is something that should be politicized against others or that what they see as Caligulan vices that are OK for consenting adults in their private lives should be propagandized to kids. If you don’t like that, well, fine. Stay in the US and borrow money from the Chinese (who have been known to execute gays) and learn to kiss the behinds of Saudis (who still execute gays).

A Republican President oversaw the largest outsourcing of American jobs and industry in the nation’s history, did you forget? At the end of eight years of Bush, 3.5 million jobs gone, biggest mortgage crisis in the history of the U.S., and two baseless, unfunded wars. Congratulations conservatives.

Beware of liberal dummies who can’t tell sanity from asininity.

  27. JayTee says:

Wow. There’s a racist rant if ever there was one. But I agree with you on one point: “Let the whites stay in their countries and we stay in ours.” Absolutely right. Abraham Lincoln wanted to ship the blacks back to Africa because he said the races would probably never get along, and he had a good point. But it’s not a racial thing so much as it’s a cultural thing; if cultures are vastly different, they have a hard time working together. The “multiculturalism” idea is somewhat of a joke, and bowing down to the god of “diversity’ has been extremely costly to all civilized and industrialized societies.

  28. JayTee says:

The kindest thing I can say is, try again when you’re sober.

  29. JayTee says:

What the hell is “neoliberal?” Neo-stupid? The liberals have hurt the poor gravely by letting their politicians destroy the engines of productivity, and without productivity there’s nothing to share, distribute, or redistribute. Why haven’t all thinking people caught on to the neo-dumb-dumbs that are destroying our standard of living and way of life?

  30. JayTee says:

Regardless of race or color, the Obamas are monkeys . . . and the American public are suckers. Of course the liberals love to hate Tim Scott, Herman Cain, Allen West, Ben Carson, Mia Love, and all the other “black” people they don’t agree with . . . but don’t touch Obamanation and Moochelle, the biggest disasters to ever enter the White House.

White countries around the world have done exceptionally well on exploiting Africans and Africa for centries. Europe was bulit on these exploits. But African people at home and in the diaspora, hear me, don’t worry, their days are numbered as a dominant force. We do not need Whites for anything. Zero. We have it all. They certainly need what we have. What the hell is in any of these countries that we need? That’s why they continue to do their best to keep Africa unstable. What is in Russia that we need? Let the whites stay in their countries and we stay in ours. They stole America, the stole Australia, the stole South Africa, they hate us so much then why the F*ck they don’t go back to their cold boring countries. Then let’s see who truely needs who?

These are, after all, the “Country Club Games.” Sure there are people from cold climates who ski to school, etc., but these games are overwhelmingly WHITE and WEALTHY. In the past (I haven’t watched these games) there are profiles on individual athletes. Look at how many of them leave large homes while riding in Mercedes to a skating rink or slalom that they have all to themselves and their coach.

Just about anyone can run and jump in preparation for the Summer Olympics, which is why many athletes come from poor nations. How many people can afford to ski or ice skate year-round?

I know right!?! Here in America they try to say only White people are racists..
I mean take Time Wise and Professor Noel Ignatiev (both Jewish) call for the elimination of the “White” (Christians not Jews) man.

What’s funny is that isn’t the first time this segment of society has called for the elimination of a European peoples — “Germany Must Perish” which called for the all out slaughter and subjugation of the German people was written before the “holocaust” — I guess that’s why it didn’t matter that the “Soviet Red Army” raped and murdered their way across the continent..

It turns out so – “it seemed to me, what it seemed to Irina Rodnina, what Obama is similar to a monkey” Understood me, turkey-cocks, or not? You, you told all world – our president Obama and his wife Michele are similar to monkeys. you stupid both don’t understand it, and you don’t understand even if you will think of it. Simply you gays and racists. You thought up Ku Klus-clan. You remember it? You steal others oil, you remember it? You chuzhimy hands launch wars, you remember it, and you believe in God??? As you would expect, African countries dealing with HIV/AIDS and constant war, fill the bottom of the table. Non-African countries: Afghanistan, Haiti, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Yemen, Timor Leste then Mother Russia.

American gay-hating grifters have picked a fine role model for family values! Imagine what it must be like being a child growing up in a household where dear old Dad is drunk all the time.

  51. Houndentenor says:

that’s bullshit. It is currently common in Russia for people to kidnap and torture gay men and post the videos of the crime online. There are no investigations or prosecutions of those crimes. There are a great many countries where such thuggery would be punished even if the victim belonged to a minority group that wasn’t popular. Yes, I realize there are horrible acts of violence in every country, but the confidence with which thugs can attack in Russia knowing no one will come after them is rather unique.

  52. Mike_in_the_Tundra says:

We could go back and forth here endlessly, but I know enough to see that you are utterly clueless, locked into your ‘perceptions’ and uncaring about the fact that these gay people simply want the rights you and I already have. Save for being arrested, beaten, jailed or deported for being gay in the first place…right?

” but you have to force people to think like you”

Yes, it’s so awful to have to be ‘forced’ to be a decent individual, someone who gives a damn about someone OTHER than themselves. Actually, what’s awful is that you would HAVE to be ‘forced’ to do so.

” I will support your right to your lifestyle if you support my freedom of speech to criticize it”

    No.

  98. The_Fixer says:

Fred Koch, father of the famous Koch brothers, founded the JBS. So the fact is, they’re still around and causing more trouble than ever.

While the name “The John Birch Society” may be mud among people old enough to remember them when they made the news regularly, they still are a functioning organization. It’s just that their ideals have been exported to other movements, such as the TEA party. Go read the Wikipedia page on them. A lot of their core principles have been embraced by not only the extremists of the TEA party, but by the so-called “mainstream Republicans”. The overt racism has been replaced by more subte forms of racism. That’s the big distinction these days.

It’s like the bad penny that keeps turning up over and over.

I didn’t realize that you needed a license to quote the Olympic Charter in public. At any rate, no permit will ever be given to Gay people in Russia, regardless of the content of the protest. http://www.advocate.com/world/2014/02/08/ioc-ok-arrest-gay-rights-protesters-russia. Meanwhile, yesterday, in Sochi, and not in the approved protest zone, protesters appeared with anti-Gay signs. None were arrested or even stopped by the police. The IOC’s endorsement of violations of their own friggin’ charter is a major story and should be highlighted.

    4) Russia’s and the IOC’s claim that they games aren’t political were shown to be false by Russia choosing two POLITICIANS (who both voted for the anti-Gay law) of the ruling party to light the Olympic cauldron.
    5) The lighter of the cauldron chosen by Russia is someone who engages in base racism. This is not only a huge issue for the credibility of the Games and the IOC, but also for FIFA. As you know, Russia will be hosting the 2018 World Cup. Racism is a big issue with FIFA (or at least they say it is). There has been a significant issue with non-white soccer players being subjected to racism while competing in Russia. And the banana/monkey thing in a Russian context is the same as using the N bomb, btw. Someone should get all over FIFA about this. Because if promotion of racists to be prominent symbols of Russian hosted events is the case, then FIFA must act.
    6) More problems with the Sochi venue
    7) Russian authorities blocked non-sexual, NON-POLITICAL, athletes blogs simply because they are not wearing shirts (males). I guess going shirtless is the prerogative of the great leader only in Russia.
    8) Over 45 other persons were arrested in Russia yesterday, simply for attempting to exercise their free right to protest. Some were arrested before they were able to get to the protest.
    9) IOC sponsors like Visa, McDonalds, and Coca-Cola have been silent as to the IOC’s endorsement of repression against LGBT persons and towards the repression of LGBT persons in a Russian context.

Given that people that I talk to daily seem surprised at what is going on in Russia (they really don’t know) or that it’s still legal to fire people for being gay (or not hire them in the first place) in most states, I’d say that the real problem is how woefully uninformed most people are. the media don’t do their job of informing them, mostly because the people who work in news are as ignorant of what’s going on as the rest of the country. That’s a huge problem. Please keep speaking out on issues that concern you. I’m just tired of the ad hominem attacks against people who speak out on one issue because there are other important issues as well, as if we can’t care about more than one human rights issue at a time.

  112. FLL says:

I will admit that Russia doesn’t have any actual apartheid laws regarding race. However, I think your insight about why Russia gets a special pass from the international community is dead on target. Consider the following:

    (1) Russia is a major world power.
    (2) Russia has one of the world’s biggest nuclear arsenals.
    (3) Russia has a permanent seat on the UN security council.
    (4) Even outside the UN, Russia’s wishes are always taken into consideration in any kind of international conflict.

Does Russia get preferential treatment for these reasons? Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes! South Africa never matched that criteria, and therefore, never got that kind of preferential treatment. And while we’re at it, we can note that Uganda and Nigeria certainly aren’t considered as host nations for the international Olympic Games, are they?

  113. Carr Nyuli says:

No, Big proves that Big is rather stupid. Maybe a lot of Russians are like that (the government certainly is), but that doesn’t mean they all are. You can’t use a prejudiced comment to call someone prejudiced.

  114. lynchie says:

I don’t say ignore what Russia does but it seems many times we are more offended by what other countries do and give a pass to what we do. This happens all the time when we go after Republicans and ignore the continued war, social issues, minority issues, domestic spying, gay issues right at home. We start two wars and a decade later are still killing the civilians and rewarding the dictators in those countries. If I could I would stop what is happening in Russia but I can’t. However, I can write, protest and bring to light what is happening here because we still have some semblance of free speech

It is absolute nonsense to think that the progressive Republican Earl Warren did so because of pressure from the Soviet Union. And it is idiocy to think that Earl Warren did not bring this sense of equality to SCOTUS when he was appointed Chief justice and presided over the Brown v BOE case.

  163. Bill_Perdue says:

Of course it’s not fair but neither is the growing violence we’ve seen develop because of the Putin regime’s scapegoating of the LGBT communities. I think you have to get used to it until Putin’s gang is overthrown. The Putin gang is scapegoating because the economy is getting worse and because Putin wants to deflect attention from the wealth of new ruling class of gangster capitalists. Putin is chief among them. “Putin, the Kremlin power struggle and the $40bn fortune – Citing sources inside the president’s administration, Belkovsky claims that after eight years in power Putin has secretly accumulated more than $40bn (£20bn). The sum would make him Russia’s – and Europe’s – richest man.” That was in 2007. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/dec/21/russia.topstories3

Also Putin is in the process of reviving the Russian military, the cold war, and attempting to recreate, not the USSR, but the Tsarist Empire with himself as Vladimir, Tsar of all the Russias. He’ll probably crown himself just as Napoleon did. porm. To deflect attention form all that he needs scapegoats and huge numbers of Jews, the traditional scapegoats of the right, have emigrated so that leaves gays.

For many the murder of Trayvon Martin and the beating of Rodney King brand all Americans and that’s not the reality just as homophobia is not the permanent reality for Russia. I remember during the latter years of the AIDS crisis, when my friends and acquaintances were disappearing one after the other, that we faced as much public hatred as the LGBT communities in Russia do today. We fought back and, except for ENDA, are beginning to win here and there. The situation in Russia is going to have to be solved by the Russian working class, women, national minorities and the LGBT communities themselves in alliance with their international allies, which doesn’t include any governments.

  164. ronbo says:

It’s more likely that their actions are based upon seeking power than being a racist. I personally think the Clintons aren’t overtly racist – that they simply use racism in an attempt to achieve their objectives… which, is probably worse than actual racism.

I base this upon the knowledge that:
    NAFTA gutted the American middle-class…
    DADT extended prejudice…
Cuts to welfare harmed the American underclass…
Signing the Financial Services Modernization Act, served as a destabilization and greed motivator

Looking back, I’m now quite happy that the Lewinsky affair cut short Clinton’s neo-liberal agenda. Neo-liberals (vs. actual Republicans) have been MORE damaging to our nation because they have fooled Democrats into moving far to the right. Nixon went down for much less than what Obama now brags about (assassinations, spying, etc…).

And for the bot onslaught, corruption is wrong… regardless of political party. Why would corruption with a (D) behind it be acceptable, ever?

The “racism” of Clinton is nothing compared to the racism fanned by the elite of Russia against blacks there. I always remember the issues this Afro-Cuban lesbian I know would talk about. Don’t spread false information about MR “mother Russia”.

  180. studd says:

Having been to Russia many times its is really sad how hetero-sexual relations are so miserable. The high levels of promiscuous women/men, high divorce rates, astronomical abortion rates and sexual diseases (because men refuse to wear condoms and prefer women to get pregnant as proof of their virility but not to carry children to birth), high levels of alcoholism, horrible numbers of poor/homeless old women/babushkas begging in front of the subway/metro, abandoned old women whose husbands long ago died from alcohol related diseases. Hetro-society and hetro families are mostly complete and utter failures, many destroyed by social/psycho/economic problems. And the political elite see it fit to destroy the lives of the LGBT community because they have no options, cannot stop suffocating the economic future of the nation, and stop stealing. Plus there are deep, dark closets at the highest levels of government that everybody knows exists but are too afraid to mention even outside of MR mother Russia. No one is safe from this regime.

  181. Bill_Perdue says:

    It’s not over.

The US won a battle, but not the war.

The US is still invading and occupying countries from Libya to Pakistan to maintain its economic and resource hegemony. Putin, in spite of increasing economic troubles and challenges by unions and the left is gearing up to revive economic and military competition with the US, the EU and NATO and is trying to recreate, not the USSR, but the tsarist empire for it’s gangster capitalist class, just as the banksters do here.

  182. Bill_Perdue says:

It’s 74% and that’s very bad. In 1996 it was very bad here when racist (according to Obama supporters) Bill Clinton elbowed DOMA through Congress 67% of Americans opposed marriage equality and 5% were undecided. Shortly before Obama rebranded the number opposed had dropped to the mid to low 40s and is presumably still dropping.

In the case of Russia the blame for antigay violence falls on Putin and Russian orthodox and ‘old believers’ cults. In the US in 1996 the blame fell on Clinton and the cults. In 2008 the blame fell on Obama and McCain and their parties for pandering to the cults.

The question is not about the nations involved but about the regimes and cults that mislead them and it has to put that way to avoid the mistake of making it a national difference, instead of a difference between bigots and anti-bigots in both nations.

Whatever happened to the John Birch Society? ROTFL. They’re not around to demand the impeachment of the new “criminals” who imposed judicial tyranny on Southern states in their DOMA decision last year, U.S. v Windsor. Where are the wanted posters for Kennedy, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan? No more John Birch Society. “What a world, what a world.” (The last words of the Wicked Witch of the West.)

Oy, Yahoo comments. If that’s the voice of Real America, then I am ashamed. Every once in a while, when I am in the mood for self abuse, I read them… and wish I hadn’t.

I did read your link, and then took in a few of the comments. I couldn’t take more than three, however. Not in the mood for self abuse tonight, I guess.

You’re welcome! Some years ago, I met someone involved with the case. It’s importance was validated by the issue of a commemorative stamp by the US Post Office in 2007.

Your mention of Mendez v Westminster (1947), in which the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the racial segregation of Mexican-American students in the Orange County public school system, provides interesting background for Brown v Board of Education (1954) that I wasn’t aware of. The later case follows as a logical consequence of the first case, which paved the way for Brown v BOE in every sense of the word. Something else that I just found out was that Earl Warren, who would later preside over Brown v BOE on the U.S. Supreme Court, was the governor of California at the time, and after the ruling in Mendez v Westminster, Governor Earl Warren signed into law the repeal of all further segregationist statutes in California. It’s so obvious that the Warren Court based their logic on Mendez v Westminster. Thanks for your informative post.

Given that 80% of Russians back the anti-gay pogrom, to me yes 80% of the country can go piss up a rope. And no, I am not just as bad as them. I have not held a gun to anyone’s head and raped them with a bottle all day!

  197. Strepsi says:

I’ve told you when I think your posts are very insightful, but honestly, a remark about Russian racism creates a The Clintons are racists screed + “Obama’s regime” — Bill, this is trolling.

  198. GarySFBCN says:

Sometimes you are so full of shit – the Brown v BOF case, regardless of the delusional essay on SCOTUSblog, was predicated not upon international pressure, but on Mendez v Westminster.

My last comment was a bit harsh. However, the appropriateness of putting politicians as the final torchbearers stands. And the appropriateness of allowing a woman who is reportedly romantically linked to Putin to be a final torchbearer is something that is an issue.

It’s also the first story at Yahoo!, seen by millions of American yahoos. Fortunately, it doesn’t have a comment section for them to post their often virulently ignorant comments. All comments there aren’t necessarily horrifying, like now the ones about the longer Coke ad being run on the Olympics are mainly defending it. It’s where I go to get a bit of the voice of Real America.

  215. Tom in Lazybrook says:

The other torchbearer was a politician who supports the human rights abuse laws. And another of the major torchbearers in the ceremony is the woman that is putting out for Putin. I guess the Olympics is really about getting Putin laid by providing a stage for the Dictator’s mistress. What a farce.
