Southern Baptist GOP mom from Alabama speaks out for her 6 y.o. trans kid

An impressive video from a self-proclaimed “conservative, Southern Baptist Republican from Alabama” about coming to terms with her 6-year-old “son” informing mom that “he” was really a girl.

It takes a lot of courage for any mom to go public and come out about their child, let alone a conservative Republican from Alabama.

The mom, Debi Jackson, then talks about the arguments people have made, telling her that she’s wrong to embrace her child:

“God hates transgender people. They are sinners and going to hell.”

(Jackson then chokes up.)

My God taught us to love one another. Jesus sought ought those who others rejected….

My daughter is a girl in her heart. She knows it. God knows it. And that’s good enough for me.

That’s how I feel. Conservative Republican has become an oxymoron.

  7. TampaZeke says:

I’m glad to hear that you had already done what I suggested you consider doing. Like I said, I’m a former Republican Southern Baptist from Mississippi. You and I are kindred spirits in ways that most people could never relate to. I salute you and I’m thankful that you are the mother of your daughter. She is very blessed. Let me say, from experience, don’t be surprised if you find yourself becoming less and less conservative and less and less impressed with Christianity. Not too long ago I wouldn’t have thought it possible that I would be anything but a Republican Christian (though I knew I could no longer be a Southern Baptist). Now I’m a Buddhist Democrat that realizes anything is possible. Much metta (loving kindness) to you and your family. :)

  8. Butch1 says:

Well thought out, well spoken and took down all those nasty arguments and ugly words people like to use against those they hate or do not understand and want to use their bible to beat up with. I’m glad this came from a christian conservative.

  9. Mike_in_the_Tundra says:

You are behaving wonderfully. You and your husband really must love your daughter very much. I could have become a men without a belief system. I was raised in a evangelical, Republican family. My family of origin no longer has anything to do with me. Fortunately, God saw fit to give me a husband with a loving, accepting family. Many gay people do not understand why I hold onto my Christian beliefs. So many of them have been hurt by Christians who don’t know how to behave like Christians. They use Christianity as an argument to support their prejudices. They are able to ignore Christianity in many other aspects of their lives. Your heart tells you to support your daughter, and I feel that Christ would support that. My heart will always feel that I am a Christian. Fortunately, there are many loving churches that feel that it is God’s wish for them to be loving and accepting.

I do remain conservative about many things, but I can feel no support for the Republican Party’s social stances. They seem to hate so many people. Their other stances aren’t very conservative in my opinion. I cannot vote for a person who would deny me my rights, and I’m certain that you feel the same about your daughter’s rights.

Hi, I don’t consider myself a Republican or a Southern Baptist anymore. (We also don’t live in Alabama. We are now in the Midwest.) But people need to understand how I was raised and the belief systems I was around for so many years to fully appreciate how we came to terms with our daughter’s need to transition. I am still conservative, though, and don’t know how I can find candidates from any party to vote for going forward. And we are still floundering around looking for churches that are welcoming but have a bit of a traditional conservative leanings. My point is that to support our daughter, we didn’t have to abandon every belief we’ve ever had and become athiest Democrats — which is pretty much what conservative Southern Baptist Republicans accuse us of on a daily basis. :-) Debi

  11. Houndentenor says:

Baby steps! Considering that Southern Baptists are often counseled to either disown their gay or trans kids or send them to brutal camps (see the new HBO documentary about the one in the Dominican Republican), this is a big step forward. In time maybe she’ll realize that both the Republicans and her church are the main sources of the problems that face her daughter for the rest of her life. Don’t expect that to come too quickly. She’s been heavily indoctrinated to believe that everyone who isn’t Republican and Baptist is evil.

  12. Indigo says:

She’s got her head on the right way and I bet the kid does too. Good all around!

  13. Indigo says:

Yikes! That reference dredges up memories of many other indirect slurs of yesteryear. I think it’s best to leave them to the obscurity of yesteryear.

As insulting as your last sentence is, as a Mississippian, I can’t disagree with it.

  16. HeartlandLiberal says:

As someone who was born and lived the first 23 years of their life in Alabama until fleeing the state in 1969 to grad school, the only advice I can offer this wonderful woman is that she take her daughter and flee the state as soon as possible. Although I have stayed in touch with friends and family in Alabama all these many years, I can assure you that Hades will freeze over solid to a depth of several feet before I would consider returning to Alabama to live. And I say that even though I live in Indiana, which is not exactly a paragon of liberalism. But by comparison to Alabama? Of course it could be worse, as we always said when growing up. She could be in Mississippi next door.

My thoughts are with this Mother and her daughter. Might I just add that this is what real parental love is and IF there is a god (that is a big IF) I can not imagine that god would be such a harsh judge against his “children”. I really believe he/she/it would be as loving as this Mother and embrace his/her/its creation with love and not judgment.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

  21. Colin says:

Good for her and her daughter.

  22. Tor says:

I don’t think she will be a proud Southern Baptist conservative Republican for much longer. And, she is a wonderful parent.

  23. TampaZeke says:

She is a wonderful mother and I salute her. I think she needs to reconsider what it means to be a proud Southern Baptist and conservative Republican. NO two groups have pushed and promoted and institutionalized and legislated EVERY SINGLE one of the horrible things that she listed more than Southern Baptists and Republicans.

Disclaimer: I used to be a Southern Baptist conservative Republican from Mississippi so I speak from experience here.
