Kim Davis is a Republican now, to the surprise of no one

Kim Davis is a Republican now, announcing earlier today that the Democratic Party no longer represents her, and that she and her family have switched affiliations.

As she told Reuters, in advance of her appearance at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit, “My husband and I had talked about it for quite a while and we came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party left us a long time ago, so why were we hanging on?”

Great question.

Throughout this entire showdown with the government over whether she can massively resist the Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling, Davis’s partisan affiliation never mattered. This would be true anywhere, but it’s especially true in Kentucky, which is one of the least-polarized states in the country (Democrats outnumber Republicans in partisan registration by quite a bit, yet the state is reliably red in presidential elections). Partisan affiliations don’t affect her job as county clerk in the slightest, and her refusal to do her job wasn’t made any less bad because she was elected with a D next to her name.

She's free!

She’s free!

And yet, Republican Davis apologists often found her partisan affiliation irresistible, going out of their way to remind everyone that although they agreed with her on her issue of choice, and Davis’s defenders were almost exclusively Republicans, they weren’t on the same team. If that sounds like a tacit concession of the moral high ground, that’s because it is: Keep in mind, these are the same Republican apologists who defend the Confederate flag by pointing out that Jefferson Davis was a Democrat, so the train of thought is familiar — though no less irrelevant. Both arguments are complete non-sequiturs that ignore the partisan realignment that began with the New Deal and is only now in its later stages of completion.

But now Republicans don’t have to do that dance anymore. They opened their arms to Davis’s rank bigotry and lawlessness in the name of Christian supremacy, and Davis was happy to join them. She’s right; they represent her to a T.

Kim Davis’s partisan affiliation only matters because her defenders made it matter. Now that she’s a Republican, I’m sure it will stop mattering.

Her fundamentalist version of Christianity prohibits the display of any skin above the wrist and below the ankles. I have family members who believe this, and they wear long sleeves and long pants (men) and ankle-length skirts or dresses (women) all year long.

Why is she always wearing long underwear? I thought it was pretty warm in Kentucky. Does she have a medical condition?

  9. MoonDragon says:

I think her clock runs a bit slow, or maybe even in reverse.

  10. MoonDragon says:

I knew the woman was slow, but not how slow. The Dixiecrats left the party by the mid-sixties. There are low information voters and those with a negative account balance.

  18. BeccaM says:

Davis and Wurtzelbacher are also both ignorant, hypocritical bigots. They share that, too.

  19. BeccaM says:

That’s because the Palins can sometimes be amusing in their stupid ‘Chillbilly’ trailer-trash ways. Davis is just flat out annoying, hypocritically self-righteous, and basically repulsive.

I mean, c’mon, there’s nothing funnier than watching Caribou Barbie give a speech while turkeys are being slaughtered on camera directly behind her. Or hearing about when the entire Palin clan got into a drunken brawl at a birthday party they crashed.

  20. BeccaM says:

Oh, that would be the older standard definition of the word you’re thinking of. For Christianists, a martyr is anyone who is thwarted or the least bit inconvenienced in their efforts to force their cherry-picked beliefs on others.

It’s like orange the fruit and orange the color — same word, two entirely different meanings.

I predict a reality show. All the class of Honey Boo Boo and the morals of the Duggars. Coming soon to TLC.

  22. Houndentenor says:

Good call. Except Joe the Plumber had more appeal. She’s a negative for everyone who isn’t a hardcore bigot. Yes, that’s a lot of the GOP base but among everyone else? No sale.

  23. Houndentenor says:

I think I’m more sick of Davis than I am of the Palins and that’s saying something.

  24. Houndentenor says:

The homocons loves squawking about how she was a Democrat (and how that fact was rarely mentioned in stories). They love finding the bigoted Democrats because they somehow believe that makes the large numbers of bigoted Republicans justified. What bullshit. I’m glad she’s no longer a Democrat. The GOP can have her. That’s what’s left of their party now anyway. Bigoted morons.

  25. Baal says:

One thing they have in common is neither one is a plumber. Also, neither one is actually named Joe. There is more, but those things come to mind immediately.

  26. Zorba says:

    Excellent observation!

  27. BeccaM says:

Sure, but we’d only have to endure 1 or 2 news cycles of her insufferable smug Church-Lady impersonation before TeeVee and Poly-tishuns became bored with her and she’d go back to being a bigoted and forgotten nobody.

  28. BeccaM says:

Because you’re both smart and prescient, Nicho.

  29. bpollen says:

    The night is young!

  30. MoonDragon says:

Why does everyone call her a martyr? She’s still alive, isn’t she?

  31. Thom Allen says:

Nah, once the Huckster moves on to greener pastures (pastors?) and the eminently creepy Cruz fails, Jeb! will suck up to Davis so to try to get some votes from the evangelicals. He’s desperate now.

  32. 2karmanot says:

“What’s not to like?” Don’t get me started: Sister wife hair for one, humble Mary Jane smock for another. She looks like a Brigham reject. If that makes me seem superficial, I totally embrace it. Next!

  33. 2karmanot says:

Dear Gawd, please take this sick cow into that great Chick fil a in the sky. She’s more annoying than Sara Plain and that’s saying a lot.

  34. FLL says:

Yes. But my only hope is that the media won’t be giving her interviews in jail during which she could deliver campaign speeches for Huckabee or Cruz. Some things are just too much information.

  35. nicho says:

Why do I have the feeling that Davis will be this election cycle’s Joe the Plumber?

  36. nicho says:

Maybe they’ll put her on the ticket as VP. She’s at least as qualified as Palin. She’s a gen-you-ine Christian martyr. She’s got massive name recognition, much better than Palin had. She’ll lock up the Southern snake-handling vote. What’s not to like?

  37. BeccaM says:

All the more reason why Bunning should find Davis in contempt of court and re-jail her.

  38. BeccaM says:

No idea. It can’t happen soon enough. Frankly, rather than wasting any more time on this insufferable hypocrite and homophobic bigot, I wish Judge Bunning would just drop her ass back in jail for a few months.

Yes, her bigot allies would howl about it for a while, but give it a couple weeks and she’d soon be forgotten even by them.

  39. FLL says:

Most observers are no doubt suffering from Kim Davis fatigue and hope for an early end to all the media attention about her. Alas, their wish will not be granted because Huckabee and Cruz will be inviting Kim Davis to appear at all their 2016 presidential campaign appearances. Kim Davis is now their resident Christian martyr, so we’ll be seeing much, much more of her. I try to bring a little sunshine into everyone’s day when I can, but in this case I was not able to. The ongoing Kim-Davis-faux-martyr saga is what it is. Only the elimination of Huckabee and Cruz from the 2016 primaries will send Kim Davis into richly deserved obscurity.

  40. Frank says:

    Another wing-nut in their ranks!

  41. What's It 2 you/2.0 says:

Lol. It’s no surprise that the religious right seems Kim a hero/martyr.

  42. What took her so long?

  43. nicho says:

Oh, crap. When will we have a news cycle without mention of this useless POS?
